Fire with Fire

After a long, exhausting shift in Long Beach, Jeremy Coleman, a dedicated firefighter, and his colleagues consider winding down with a bottle of 15-year-old Scotch. In a nearby convenience store, an unexpected confrontation erupts with Neil Hagan, an Aryan Brotherhood crime boss who presses the owner to align with his criminal plans. The owner insists the shop already pays protection to the Eastside Crips and belongs to their territory, so the scheme wouldn’t serve Hagan’s purposes. In a violent burst of greed, Hagan kills the store owner’s son and then the store owner himself, and Coleman barely escapes the deadly encounter. Mike Cella, a police detective whose former partner was murdered by Hagan in a different case, sees an opportunity to finally bring the man to justice. Hagan is detained and placed in a police lineup, and under pressure he calls out Coleman by name, reciting his full name, address, and Social Security number, a chilling reminder that Hagan has tracked him down.

Before the trial, Coleman agrees to enter the witness protection program and changes his last name to Douglas, leaving the fire department and moving to New Orleans. Although he struggles with the loss of his old life, he finds a measure of hope in a budding romance with Talia Durham, a Deputy United States Marshal assigned to his case. The pair’s fragile happiness is tested when two of Hagan’s hitmen ambush them; Durham is wounded, but Coleman manages to mortally wound one attacker, forcing a retreat. Hagan’s threat grows vaster—he calls to warn Coleman that he will kill everyone he loves whether he testifies or not—and Coleman makes a bold choice: he abandons the protection program to pursue justice on his own terms.

Hagan’s attorney, Harold Gethers, hits back by arranging for his client’s release from prison in the weeks leading up to the trial. Coleman returns to Long Beach and seeks out the Eastside Crips to acquire an untraceable weapon. He stages a calculated stakeout on one of Hagan’s hideouts and eliminates three of his men, leaving behind only a partial fingerprint for investigators to chase. The authorities struggle to identify the culprit because the man’s identity remains shielded by his federal witness protection status.

Cella pieces together that Coleman is the one behind the killings, though he wrestles with his own animosity toward Hagan. Coleman tracks down a hidden location tied to Hagan—a key building where the boss will be that night—and tortures one of Hagan’s henchmen to extract information that points toward Gethers. Gethers, who serves Hagan out of fear, reveals the plan and points to an abandoned building where Hagan will gather his forces.

Durham returns to Long Beach and urges Coleman to back away from his vendetta, but he closes himself off to caution. He even locks Durham in a bathroom to keep her from interfering, only for Hagan’s hitman to abduct her soon after. That fateful night, Coleman uses his firefighting know-how to set the building on fire, intending to wipe out Hagan’s crew. The inferno spirals as Coleman and Durham realize she is inside—and he drags himself through the blaze to reach her. Durham frees herself, eliminates the pursuing hitman, and together they confront the tyrant in the flames. In a tense confrontation, Durham kills Hagan and escapes the burning structure with Coleman.

In the aftermath, Cella speaks with the district attorney and confirms that no evidence was left at the burnt building to charge anyone with the deaths of Hagan and his men. The case closes in a hard, uncompromising way, and Cella is shown putting away a photo of him with his old partner, a quiet reminder of the cost of seeking justice in a world where violence can feel like an endless loop.
