Castle on the Hudson

Tommy Gordon, John Garfield, is a cocky, arrogant career thief who is nabbed by New York City authorities after a major heist and sentenced to a minimum seven years at Sing Sing, the state prison on the Hudson. There, he meets the stern warden, Walter Long, Pat O’Brien, a man whose practical outlook clashes with Tommy’s bravado, and he settles into the monotonous rhythm of prison life.

In the yard, a fellow inmate named Steve Rockford, Burgess Meredith, shares a plan for a weekend breakout. Tommy, true to his rule of thumb—“never pull a job on a Saturday”—declines the dangerous invitation, preferring to keep his head down in the routine. Yet Rockford’s bold escape attempt goes tragically wrong, and he dies, leaving a silent impression on the prison and its inmates. The warden notes Tommy’s refusal to join the scheme, seeing a glimmer of possible loyalty in him. Later, news reaches Sing Sing that Tommy’s girlfriend, Kay Manners, Ann Sheridan, is gravely ill, and the warden offers Tommy temporary unsupervised parole to visit her—an arrangement that would take place on a Saturday, further complicating the superstition that already shadows Tommy’s choices.

In New York, Tommy encounters a confrontation with his shyster lawyer, and Kay, who is sick but capable of conscience, shoots the lawyer in self-defense. Though Tommy is innocent of this crime, he decides to shield Kay and takes the blame for the shooting. He returns to Sing Sing with a confession that isn’t real, and the ensuing courtroom drama culminates in a verdict against him. Kay objects, but the proceedings move forward, and Tommy is sentenced to the electric chair. He faces the fate with a quiet resolve that few of his fellow death-row inmates display; rather than panic, he accepts the consequences, aided by a solemn warden and the prison chaplain as they walk the final mile together.

Throughout the ordeal, the heavy atmosphere of the prison—guarded routines, tense visits, and the looming specter of punishment—frames Tommy’s choice to protect Kay at great personal cost. The narrative tracks his stubborn pride, the fragile thread of loyalty, and the stark moral weight of his decision, all leading to a conclusion that is both tragic and unflinching.
