Belgian scientist Bertram Hammonds, accompanied by Gomez who survived the previous film, arrives in the Lost World with a plan to drill for crude oil. His crews begin capturing natives for slave labor, and in a brutal moment he throws Chief Palala off the edge of the plateau. Palala survives and is rescued by Malu, who carries him to a nearby village. Word of these events travels to England, where Edward Malone and Jenny Nielson remind Professor Challenger and Professor Summerlee of the promise they made to Palala: they would return to the Lost World if their aid was needed.
But the two professors are estranged. Challenger recently discredited Summerlee on a theory, and they aren’t on speaking terms. With help from Jim, Malone and Jenny manage to bluff their way aboard a steamship bound for Africa, each one believing the other will stay behind in England. When the ship reaches Africa, they unexpectedly come face to face with one another and press on together, guided by Malu to the plateau’s base and toward Chief Palala.
On the plateau, attacks by dinosaurs disrupt Hammonds’s drilling work. The crews’ misstep— tapping into a volcanic pipe during a tyrannosaurus visit— triggers a volcanic eruption that threatens to engulf the entire area. Hammonds and Gomez seize Chief Palala’s daughter and threaten to kill her unless the natives reveal how to escape. In a decisive turn, Challenger and the others arrive, having found their own ascent through the caves.
Challenger shoots and kills Gomez, and Hammonds is taken prisoner. After a string of adventures and clashes with the hostile drilling crew, the group races to stop the eruption. Challenger designs a new explosive, Challengerite, to seal the volcano. Boxes of the device are moved into a nearby cave, but Hammonds pursues Jim inside, trying to entice him with promises of wealth. Jim defies him and triggers the explosives, halting the eruption and seemingly killing Hammonds in the process.
In the aftermath, Summerlee congratulates Challenger on the Challengerite breakthrough, and the two scholars wonder how much longer they can keep the Lost World safe from human interference.
