Resurrection of the Little Match Girl

In modern Korea, the city’s cold streets tell their own kind of story through a girl known as the Little Match Girl, a figure of quiet resilience who wanders the sidewalks trying to sell her matches. No one seems to want them, and shops turn her away. Hunger gnaws at her, and she lights a few matches to warm her hands, only to be met with rebukes and empty pockets. A passerby offers a grim alternative, suggesting she sniff the fumes from the matches instead of lighting them. She complies, and in that fleeting moment, the world grows warmer and brighter as snowflakes melt into cherry petals, yet the scene ends in a stark tragedy as she dies on the street. The tragedy lingers as a haunting emblem of the city’s indifference, a memory that will echo throughout the intertwining stories that follow.

Ju, [Hyun Sung], and his friend Lee, [Kim Jin-pyo], occupy a separate thread of the tale. They are inside a bar, entertaining two young women, while Lee—a celebrated StarCraft player in a tournament—dominates the room with his charisma, and Ju—more focused on his next meal than on glory—dreams of following in his friend’s footsteps and becoming a true gamer. Ju works as a delivery boy, a job that mocks his gaming ambitions with its humbling demands and scolding managers. He yearns for a breakthrough, a way to prove himself beyond the ordinary grind of daily work.

The pair’s evening spills into the arcade, a place that becomes a doorway to another world. It is here that Ju encounters the Match Girl again, this time in the form of a girl he has glimpsed before and a lighter he purchases from the arcade. He trails the girl, but she is joined by another man, and he follows them from a distance, moving from city streets to riverboats, until he awakens back in front of the arcade, the lighter in hand and the Match Girl nowhere to be found. The phone number printed on the lighter reveals a strange invitation: a message welcoming him to a game called Resurrection of the Little Match Girl. The game’s premise is chillingly abstract and morally complex: Ju must let the girl die, but she must die with the image of him as her beloved in her heart. The boundaries between reality and fiction blur, and Ju finds himself drawn into a labyrinth of choices that could alter both their fates and the city’s.

Within the game, Ju is introduced to a host of figureheads who stand between him and the Match Girl. An organ harvester’s designs are foiled by a small gang and a rider of the road—Lara, a formidable female gunslinger on a motorcycle—who becomes a recurring, enigmatic presence. Ju asks Lara to take him under her wing as a student, but she resists, leaving him to navigate the perilous realm on his own. The girl’s safety is threatened by a gang planning to abduct her, a plan that is thwarted by Lara’s intervention, though not without consequences: Lara is knocked unconscious, and Ju’s intervention saves her in the moment but deepens the danger surrounding them both.

As the plot unfolds, the System—an all-encompassing artificial intelligence that governs the game—frames Ju as a virus and begins to hunt him. The chase intensifies, and Ju is forced to flee with the Match Girl in tow, their lives threaded together by a shared peril. The pursuit draws in the System’s designer, a complex figure who hides in the real world, appearing at the pier disguised as a fisherman. This designer offers cryptic guidance and passes along a crucial clue: a mackerel, a seemingly ordinary toy gun with extraordinary power, the key to turning the tide against the System. Ju is saved at a critical moment by this designer, who reappears later alongside Lara, whom he had previously helped escape danger, and their alliance becomes essential to Ju’s mission.

With the designer’s help, Ju returns to the Match Girl and carries her out of immediate danger, seeking shelter in a restaurant while the city’s soldiers close in. The next day, the girl wakes by Ju’s side and, emboldened, takes up the gun that accompanies her newfound independence. She becomes a reluctant symbol of resistance, selling her lighters anew while bluntly resisting approaches from those who would harm or control her. The Match Girl’s fame grows, attracting further attempts by the gangsters and the soldiers to capture or reprogram her. She even threatens to shoot herself if forced to return to the old order, and the gang’s leader—driven by love and obsession—tries to manipulate her feelings. In a cruel twist, he claims credit for a past murder of her boyfriend that, in truth, the System orchestrated. The Match Girl is taken away to be reprogrammed, a fate that would erase her most deeply human memories.

Ju, guided by the System’s designer and aided by Lara—who is brought back into play after being saved—embarks on a direct assault against the System itself. He discovers a way to strike at the core using the mackerel as a weapon and, armed with courage and a few hard-won allies, makes his way into the System’s fortress. The battle is a surreal, shifting panorama of landscapes and enemies, with Ju persistently sensing the Match Girl’s location as he fights his way toward her. He confronts and defeats the man named Lee along the way, but the path to the core remains perilous. Inside the System’s fortress, Ju presses forward alone, and his victory is tainted by tragedy as Lara is killed and the Match Girl stands isolated and unrecognizable to him due to reprogramming.

Ju reaches the System’s core and unlocks a confrontation with the altered world that now guards the Match Girl. He witnesses the moment when he must choose whether to abandon his humanity or to risk everything for her. The outcome hinges on the game’s internal rules: Ju is praised for his performance, yet he arrives too late—the Match Girl has already been reprogrammed and does not recognize him. In a final, desperate bid, Ju sacrifices himself in a bid to reach her, and the screen flashes with a stark Game Over, leaving him to wake up again as a delivery boy, the entire fantasy dissolving back into ordinary life.

There is, however, another ending presented by the game. In this alternate version, Ju asks to return the lighter to the Match Girl, and she is given that chance. As he hands it over, his tear lands on her palm, and the girl—now emboldened—snatches a gun and takes aim at the world around them. She chases a butterfly out to the sea, firing as she runs on the water’s surface, but she misses. She is shot in the back and sinks, and Ju dives after her to save her. He shoots the butterfly, and the world shatters into fragments. Ju awakens in an unknown place, living with the Match Girl, who remembers nothing of her past. The two drift in a liminal space between memory and oblivion, a quiet counterpoint to the harsh choices of the game.

Across these threads—the city’s cold streets and the game’s feverish, perilous corridors—the story holds a single question: what does it mean to care for another when reality and illusion blur? The narrative keeps returning to themes of vulnerability, choice, and the cost of desire to be more than one’s given lot. It remains a cautionary tale wrapped in action and fantasy, where a hopeful but doomed delivery boy, a mysterious designer, a fearless gunfighter, and a girl who cannot quite remember her past collide in a mirror of a city’s longing to believe in something more than survival.
