Raja Singh a.k.a. Raja Babu Govinda is the sole heir to a wealthy village couple. He has a kind heart, but his upbringing is spoiled, his manners unsophisticated, and his education barely beyond basics. The village is plagued by Lakhan, Prem Chopra, who pretends to be an ally to Raja’s father while secretly siphoning funds and sowing trouble for Raja and his family.
Raja is a frequent visitor to the village photo studio, where he poses in a new outfit each time, always flanked by his loyal sidekick Nandu, Shakti Kapoor. He is drawn to Madhubala “Madhu” the moment he sees her photograph in the studio, and his interest quickly turns into persistent attention. Madhu, who is unimpressed by Raja’s antics, arrives in the village with her entourage, hoping perhaps to set boundaries with the presumptuous heir. In the ensuing chaos, they mistake one of Raja’s neighbors for Raja herself, and Madhu’s group ends up kidnapping the mistaken man and bringing him back to their village. Later, Madhu spots one of Raja’s photos in the studio where he is pictured as a lawyer, and she mistakes his costume for the real thing.
Believing Raja to be a legitimate professional, Madhu agrees to marry him—only to discover that he is neither a lawyer nor educated. The shock of this supposed deceit infuriates her, and she storms to Raja’s home, tearing up the wedding invitations and hurling insults at Raja’s father. Raja still wants to marry Madhu, but his father refuses to grant permission and tries to push him toward marrying a mentally challenged girl to safeguard the family’s honor. Raja refuses this arrangement, rebukes the girl’s parents, and the girl’s mother reveals a painful secret: Raja is not his biological child; he was an orphan found at the steps of a mandir and adopted by his parents.
The revelation fills Raja with gratitude toward the family that raised him, and he resolves to honor his father’s wishes. Meanwhile, Madhu realizes there was never any intentional deceit on Raja’s part, and her love for him deepens as she chooses to forgive. Raja, however, feels compelled to explain his new circumstances and asks her to forget him, but Madhu refuses to walk away and pursues him with renewed resolve.
This tension culminates when Raja’s father misreads his son’s loyalty and banishes him for breaking the vow to stay away from Madhu. Lakhan, ever the schemer, seizes the moment to strike—together with his son Banke, Gulshan Grover—and abduct Raja’s parents with the aim of seizing the family’s fortune. Raja dashes to their aid, fighting through danger to rescue his parents. After a grueling confrontation, Raja defeats the would-be usurpers, and his father’s understanding finally returns as he recognizes the depth of his son’s love and respect. With the obstacle overcome, he grants his blessing for Raja to unite with Madhu, and the couple’s bond triumphs over the earlier misunderstandings.
