Lovers Sethu and Ranjani arrive at a cliff, where they plan to end their lives after facing brutal opposition from Ranjani’s parents who reject Sethu, the son of a drunkard cook, as a suitable match. They fear threats of violence and even death, and in a desperate jump, Sethu becomes trapped in a tree and survives while Ranjani dies. Ranjani’s Father tries to pin the death on Sethu, attempting to have him jailed for murder, but there is no evidence to prove foul play. In a further twist of fate, Sethu is arrested for having attempted suicide, a consequence of the chaotic aftermath.
A year passes, and Sethu is released. His well-wisher Padmini, who runs a dance school, offers him a chance to start over as a dance instructor. He continues to visit the cliff in memory of Ranjani, a ritual that keeps her memory alive. On one of his journeys, he encounters a girl who tries to take her own life, and he intervenes to stop her. Later, he sees her again in a gallery and learns she is Malini; initially, he treats her with indifference, but she leaves a lingering impression.
Malini crosses paths with Sethu again at a tourist spot, where she secretly photographs him. When he discovers this, he destroys her camera, and she becomes part of his world as his student at the dance school. Although Sethu frequently belittles Malini, she remains persistent and gradually falls in love with him. The story deepens as Malini meets Sethu’s uncle, Chellapa, who dresses like Charlie Chaplin and brings a lighter, humorous energy to the tale. Learning of Sethu’s past heartbreak, Chellapa’s presence helps Malini win Sethu’s affection, and her affection grows despite the obstacles they face.
Chellapa’s wit and warmth become a catalyst for healing old wounds, especially as Malini is Sinhalese, which causes friction with some of her classmates. Sethu steps in to protect her, offering support and demonstrating care. Even as Sethu’s prickly side surfaces, his growing feelings for Malini become undeniable, and he begins to understand that his heart has chosen a new path.
At the cliff, Sethu seeks a blessing from Ranjani for his union with Malini, then confesses his love and proposes to her. Malini’s bond with Chellapa continues to bring joy and laughter, which briefly unsettles Sethu as he tries to imitate Chellapa’s Chaplin-inspired mannerisms, sometimes to comic or painful effect. He soon learns more about Chellapa’s own past, including a failed relationship he once tried to forget by wearing a Chaplin mask.
In a touching twist, Sethu helps reunite Chellapa with his former love, Padmini, who never married, strengthening the idea that lives can be rebuilt on honesty and companionship. But the cultural tension remains palpable: Malini’s father, Malini’s Father, fears for his daughter’s future due to the Tamil-Sinhalese divide, yet his approval gradually grows as he sees the couple’s commitment.
Malini travels from Sri Lanka to Tamil Nadu to join Sethu, cementing their shared future. The couple’s happiness is threatened once more when news reaches them that Ranjani’s father intends to destroy their alliance. On the day of Sethu’s engagement, a treacherous basket of apples containing a time bomb is sent to Sethu’s father, posing a deadly trap. Sethu and Malini attempt to escape, but the bomb detonates in Chellapa’s car, taking both lovers with it. In the aftermath, Chellapa returns to the cliff to place flowers, honoring the memory of the couple who died pursuing a love that defied expectations.
