Raunak Kaul [Rajeev Khandelwal] lives, eats, and breathes music, carrying forward the flame of his late father Parth Kaul, a musician who never broke through to wider success. As he lands in Mumbai, he begins his journey as a DJ in his uncle Surendra’s night club Tango Charlie, a venue run by the enigmatic Charlie [Mohan Kapur]. The scene hums with club lights and loud rhythms, and Raunak soon dreams of broader horizons—establishing his own studio, crafting original music, and even taking on the score for a film directed by [Anurag Kashyap].

In the early days, success feels tangible, but a cruel change begins to creep in. Raunak starts to lose his hearing, first noticing a piercing high-pitched ring during an interview. He soldiers on as he works on his next album with his friends Banjo and Biscuit, pushing through the noise of clubs and concerts as the world around him seems to grow distant. The drift becomes undeniable when a gig in the club exposes a failing second channel in his headphones; he struggles to beatmatch, the crowd boos, and Raunak lashes out by hurling the turntable and mixer onto the floor, earning him his marching orders.

A doctor [Manu Rishi Chadha] confirms the severity: Raunak has already lost hearing in one ear and has only about 30% of his hearing left in the other. The prognosis is sobering, and the warning is blunt—if he continues to abuse drugs and expose himself to loud noises, total deafness could follow.

During a recording session, Raunak confesses the full weight of his loss to Banjo. To illustrate, he inserts a hearing aid and demonstrates the sounds he no longer hears. In a sudden, overwhelming moment, a monitor speaker’s blast compels him to lean in; a frustrated Biscuit smashes a guitar into an amplifier at maximum volume, the resulting feedback knocks Raunak unconscious. The damage is catastrophic: the trauma leaves him permanently deaf.

With his hearing gone, the dream of finishing his album collapses. He loses his recording contract, and Charlie abandons him. Shonali [Mrinalini Sharma] also departs from his life, leaving Raunak adrift in a bleak void. He sinks into a deep depression, repeatedly throwing himself against walls until exhaustion.

In the depths of despair, Raunak’s life takes a drastic turn when he encounters Gauri [Soha Ali Khan], an instructor for the deaf. She teaches him to read lips and to interpret sounds through visual and tactile channels. They grow close, and their bond deepens into intimacy. Through her guidance, Raunak begins to perceive sound in a new way, not by listening in the traditional sense, but by feeling the rhythm, the pitch, and the vibrations around him. He even conceives a novel method for mixing music: he watches an oscilloscope trace while resting his feet on vibrating speakers, and somehow, he creates a brand-new mix CD—Raunak Is Hear—entirely on his own, a testament to resilience and ingenuity.

Raunak finally hands his new creation to Charlie, who is visibly thrilled by the potential to market his disability as a powerfully unique asset. The label sees a comeback story, and Charlie pushes Raunak to perform live, insisting that the risks are worth the reward and that the world will embrace his renewed vision. But Raunak sobers with clarity: even if he returns to the stage, he has nothing to prove to his critics. The comeback gig unfolds with a surprising electricity; the audience is moved, and many observers insist the performance reveals a talent even greater than Raunak’s earlier work.

After the triumph, Raunak and Gauri disappear from the public eye—out of Charlie’s orbit, off the radar of the media, and far from the once-booming music scene. In a lingering talking-head montage, people wonder where he is, whether he is alive, and what his life has become.

In the end, Raunak’s path returns to the quiet, purposeful labor of teaching. He is shown guiding a group of deaf children to perceive sound in his distinctive way, sharing the gift that allowed him to hear anew. He continues to send a CD of his compositions to Charlie every few months, a quiet reminder of the journey he survived. A final glimpse suggests a future where Raunak walks hand in hand with Gauri and a child—perhaps their own—down a street where no one recognizes them, yet the bond they’ve built glows with an enduring, shared music.
