Prophet (2022) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Luciani needed someone outside the Corsican faction to carry out the killing so it wouldn't appear as an internal Corsican execution. Choosing Malik, a Maghrebi, made it look like inter-faction violence rather than a Corsican hit, which protected the Corsicans from retaliation and allowed them to maintain their plausible deniability within the prison's tense political landscape.

By killing Reyeb, Malik became complicit in the Corsicans' crimes and therefore useful to them. His willingness to carry out such a dirty job demonstrated loyalty and usefulness, making him a valuable asset. The Corsicans could now control him while using his North African background as cover for their operations.

Foreshadowing: This protection becomes crucial later when Luciani promotes Malik to serve as his eyes and ears inside the prison.

When Brahim Lattrache held Malik at gunpoint, Malik recalled a dream about a deer warning him of danger. Moments later, they actually struck a deer with their car, which Lattrache interpreted as a supernatural sign of Malik's potential. This coincidence convinced Lattrache to trust Malik despite learning he killed Reyeb, securing the crucial partnership that would later help Malik break from Luciani.

Malik admitted killing Reyeb to prove his value and seriousness to Lattrache. By openly confessing to such a notorious murder, he demonstrated he was capable of dangerous work and wasn't just another minor criminal. This bold move impressed Lattrache and established Malik as someone willing to do whatever necessary, making him a more attractive partner for the Maghrebi operation.

Killing Marcaggi would have been direct retaliation and immediately traced back to them. Instead, they killed his bodyguards, kidnapped him, and framed Luciani as the mastermind. By abandoning Marcaggi alive in the city while blaming Luciani, they created chaos between Corsican factions and eliminated Luciani's power base without getting their hands dirty, all while positioning themselves as the real power behind the Maghrebis.

Foreshadowing: This strategic framing ultimately allows Malik to become the Maghrebi faction leader as Luciani's influence collapses.

Luciani discovered Malik was using his day-release privileges for personal criminal enterprises that bypassed the Corsican organization. The spoon torture, forcing a spoon into Malik's eye, was a brutal reminder of who controlled him and a warning against independent action. It demonstrated that despite Malik's growing responsibilities, he remained a subordinate tool whose autonomy was strictly limited.

Foreshadowing: This torture hardens Malik's resolve to eventually overthrow Luciani's authority.

Ryad's terminal cancer created a personal stakes for Malik beyond survival. When Ryad was released early due to his illness, he and Malik built the hashish operation together. When Ryad's cancer returned, he made Malik promise to care for his wife and child. This pledge gave Malik a genuine moral reason to succeed, not just for power, but to honor his friend's trust and provide for his family.

Foreshadowing: On release day, Malik is greeted by Ryad's wife and son, fulfilling the promise he made.

After being placed in solitary for returning late, Malik missed Luciani's retaliation. Meanwhile, the frame job on Marcaggi caused Luciani's Corsican faction to collapse in the broader prison network. When Malik returned to general population, the Maghrebis recognized his growing power and reputation, his willingness to kill, his connections outside prison, and his defiance of Luciani. They appointed him as their new leader.

Luciani created the very system that enabled Malik's ascent. By making Malik his enforcer, teaching him Corsican, and giving him day-release privileges, Luciani gave Malik the tools, connections, and experience to operate beyond Corsican control. Luciani's attempt to crush Malik's independence through torture backfired, pushing him toward the Maghrebi faction. By the time Luciani tried to act, Malik had already built external alliances and internal loyalty.

Malik leaves prison as a powerful figure with an established criminal network, having become leader of the Maghrebis and eliminating Luciani's faction. However, his future is described as an "uneasy triumph", he carries the psychological scars of killing Reyeb, the physical mark of the spoon torture, and the weight of his promise to Ryad's family. He steps into the outside world with power but also with enemies and moral consequences that will shape whatever comes next.
