A man finds Jake Farley lying under the bridge, rope around his foot. He realizes Farley is dead and the discovery sets off a web of suspicion around his circle.

Joe wakes with a splitting headache and blood on his shirt after a night of drinking, unable to recall the previous night. His blood is found on the murder weapon at the apartment, leading detectives to arrest him. Public defender Jenny Hudson is assigned to meet and represent him.

Public defender Jenny Hudson is assigned to meet and represent Joe, kicking off his legal defense. She begins to investigate the case, trying to understand what happened the night before.

Joe and Jenny arrive at the bar to gather clues, where Joe meets Jake's son Matt. Matt, believing Joe killed his father, has an employee tell them to leave.

Leaving the bar, they notice what seems to be a policeman watching them. A near head-on collision forces them to abandon the chase.

Deborah Quinn tells Jenny that Joe was with her the night of the murder and fears her husband Vincent, a violent crime boss, may be involved.

Believing an old nemesis, Harry Norton, may be involved, Joe tracks him down at his business. Norton is out of the country with his new wife.

At the trial, it is revealed that Farley was disliked by nearly everyone. Farley taped conversations with people, including Joe, and many of the tapes contained incriminating evidence used to blackmail people, including police officers.

Convict Tony Sklar contacts Jenny and offers to provide evidence that could clear Joe in exchange for a deal to lessen his sentence. She visits him in the hospital infirmary and learns he was hired by Norton to kill Farley and his new wife Celeste.

Before a deal can be finalized, Norton has Sklar killed in prison. This violent act shows Norton's willingness to silence witnesses.

Joe doctors a tape of Sklar to make Norton believe he is still alive. He uses this deception to manipulate Norton and gain a strategic advantage.

Norton comes to exact revenge, finding Sklar, killing three police officers and shooting Joe, before finding Jenny.

Norton confesses to arranging Farley's murder and pinning it on Joe, hoping to fulfill two vendettas at once.

Jenny tells Norton that she can take him to Sklar. She kills Norton and reunites with Joe outside the building.
