Phileine Says Sorry

Phileine flies to New York to be with Max and quickly meets his circle of friends upon arriving at his house. On the plane, Fabian and Lena offer to give her a tour and Fabian hands her his number. She attends a welcome party at Max's place, but fatigue and alcohol lead her to an early bedtime.

Max leaves for rehearsal, promising a dinner together. Phileine finds a note and heads into the living room where she meets Gulpje and they quickly become friends, planning to have lunch together.

Phileine takes a guided tour around the city offered by Fabian, but it becomes too personal as he presses his advances. She firmly reminds him that he has a wife, setting a boundary early on.

Max cannot make the planned dinner due to rehearsal, so Phileine spends the night with Max's friends. Gulpje joins in, and the group is teased and provoked with jokes at others’ expense.

Phileine attends the premiere of Romeo and Juliet with the company. The play’s explicit sexual content and nudity shocks portions of the audience, who leave during the break, while Phileine remains to see how it ends.

At the after party, Phileine seeks explanations from Max and the director Reginald but receives none, leading to a quarrel with Max. The dispute lingers until they settle it later in a pub.

The next day Phileine and Gulpje visit the restaurant where a scene from When Harry Met Sally was filmed. Two men invite them to their table and watch as they perform tricks with panting and moaning, which becomes embarrassing when they start screaming.

The women later run into Jules and discuss sexual harassment. After an insulting remark by Phileine, Jules departs, and Phileine discovers that Jules is not female but male.

Phileine meets LT, the boyfriend of ‘terrible Joanna,’ on his boat and engages in sex with him as revenge for Joanna’s earlier on-stage escapade with Max.

The next day they attend the last performance; from the back of the theater Phileine sees Max about to sleep with Joanna and disrupts the scene. Max defends his action as art, but the audience sides with Phileine.

Newspapers cover the on-stage incident, and Phileine is invited to TV shows. She takes control on David Letterman’s show, winning the audience’s support and receiving money to stay in a hotel.

The next day Max arrives at Phileine's door to take her to an AIDS Gala for his friend Leonard. She refuses to go, and he lifts her over his shoulder into a taxi.

The atmosphere remains hostile, and Phileine finally grasps why everyone is angry with her. She delivers a heartfelt speech on stage, apologizing for the first time in her life and ends with the line 'Sorry that I exist.'
