Leonard Borland (a New York City wrecking contractor) is married to the socialite Doris, an aspiring opera singer who lacks true star power. To support her dream, he funds her recital, spending about $3,000 to keep her publicity and profile afloat. Meanwhile, opera celebrity Cecil Carver is on the lookout for a suitable baritone to anchor her next production. A chance encounter brings the two worlds together: after Borland’s unsuccessful attempt to convince a critic to attend Doris’s recital, Cecil attends the performance, becomes intrigued, and later phones Borland to invite him to her apartment to offer her thoughts.
