Nate, portrayed by Mickey Rourke, is a struggling jazz musician battling his personal demons as a recovering heroin addict. Following a night of performance, he finds himself in a perilous situation; after being mugged and bound, he awakens inside a vehicle that is taking him out into the desolate desert. Just as he is about to meet his end at the hands of his assailant, he is unexpectedly saved when a group of Indians intervenes, shooting his captor and leaving Nate unharmed.
As Nate wanders through the desert, he discovers a mysterious circus, where he becomes enchanted by the enchanting Lily, a sideshow performer with magnificent wings, played by Megan Fox. Though Lily initially appears cold and aloof, she soon realizes that Nate might be her chance for a better future. However, their fledgling connection is put at risk when the sideshow’s owner, Rhys Ifans, makes attempts on Nate’s life. In a daring escape, Lily steals a truck, rescuing Nate and the two flee to the city together.
As they grow closer, Nate’s fear of danger increases and he seeks out Happy Shannon, portrayed by Bill Murray, a powerful gangster who once put out a hit on him after Nate’s brief affair with Happy’s wife, whom Happy ultimately murdered. To save Lily’s life, Nate hatches a plan to offer her as a spectacle to paying customers, offering Happy 75% of the earnings. Initially, Happy scoffs at the idea until he realizes the truth of Lily’s wings through binoculars.
In a twist of fate, Happy kidnaps Lily and promises to spare Nate, provided he keeps his distance. As Nate comes to terms with his love for Lily, he devises a plan to rescue her from Happy’s clutches. They find themselves at the top of a building, pursued by Happy’s men. Nate urges Lily to take the leap and trust in her ability to fly. Despite her doubts, when Nate jumps first, Lily follows, discovering her own capacity for flight as she catches him mid-air.
As they soar above the desert, Nate gazes down and sees his own lifeless body at the location where the Indians shot his would-be assassin. This revelation suggests that the incredible events leading up to this moment might have been a manifestation of Nate’s dying thoughts. The film concludes with the breathtaking image of Lily carrying Nate skyward, leaving viewers to ponder the boundaries between life, death, and love.
