Max Dire [Mario Van Peebles] is a Los Angeles detective under mounting strain, as his wife Liza [Paula Marshall] accuses him of bringing work home and never truly leaving the job at the door. The pressure spikes when his partner, Jim Sheldon [Tony Denison], shoots himself in a moment of despair, a tragedy that shakes Max to his core. Realizing his colleague’s suicide signals deeper trouble, Adam Garou [Bruce Payne], a high-ranking officer celebrated for cutting crime in other major cities, invites Max to attend a weekly gathering at his apartment where other troubled officers find a sense of purpose. Garou insists that Max is a brilliant detective who should tackle his problems rather than quitting the force, and though Max remains skeptical—especially since he and Liza have already tried counseling—he agrees to participate.
