Balu and Velu, officers in the British Indian Air Force, fight in World War II. A Japanese air-raid brings down their plane and Velu is grievously injured. Balu carries Velu 50 miles to a village in Assam, where Velu regains consciousness and begins to recover under the care of Indra (also called Indroma) and her father.

Velu slowly regains his strength under the careful care of Indra and her father. Balu stays by his side as they recover from the crash and the war's aftermath.

Japanese soldiers search for Balu and Velu in the village. To save Velu, Balu hides him and ultimately sacrifices himself when the soldiers close in.

Velu survives the turmoil and marries Indra, whom he teaches Tamil and whom he calls Indra. The couple begins their life together in the village.

The day after Velu's wedding, he is found by the British Indian Army and leaves with them, leaving Indra behind. Indra becomes pregnant and gives birth as their village is bombed, and she loses her eyesight.

Velu travels to Chennai to search for his wife after seeing the devastation, but finds only ruins and believes Indra is dead. He goes to his maternal uncle in Chennai, grieving the loss.

Five years after Velu's departure, Balu is acquitted in court and released in Delhi after his INA involvement in Japan. In a refugee camp there, he sees a blind Indra with her son and learns that Indra's father has died.

Balu vows to help Indra locate Velu and unites them with Indra's son, then travels toward Chennai to find Velu. He takes Indra and her son along, moving toward a possible reunion.

In Chennai, Velu is shown running a company and has married Janaki, his maternal uncle's daughter, who has heart problems and a son. Velu believes Indra is dead.

Saro, Velu's sister, falls in love with Balu and he reciprocates. Velu later learns that Indra and her son are staying in Balu's house, alive and well.

Velu confronts Balu with Indra's presence and the truth about their past. Janaki learns that Indra is Velu's first wife, collapses from the shock, and dies, having arranged for Balu and Saro to be together.

Before dying, Janaki requests that her eyes be transplanted to Indra so that Indra might regain her sight. The family agrees, setting the stage for a life-changing transplant.

Janaki's eyes are transplanted to Indra, restoring Indra's sight. The moment is filled with mixed emotions as the families begin to find their new balance.

With Indra's sight restored and Balu united with Saro, the families begin to heal and rebuild their lives in Chennai. The film closes on a note of tentative reconciliation and renewed hope.
