Pakshe centers on Balachandra Menon, Mohanlal, an IAS officer whose life unfolds as a study in sacrifice and resilience. Born into a poor family, Balachandra watches as his father, Karamana Janardanan Nair, sells everything the family owns to fund endless legal battles, leaving Balachandra to carry the weight of mounting debts and shattered hopes.
Growing up under such strain, Balachandra is mentored by his devoted teacher, Unniyettan, Jagathy Sreekumar, who fosters in him the dream of a brighter future through the civil service. Amidst the grind of hardship, Balachandra finds love with Nandini, Shobana, a talented writer from a wealthy background. Their bond is welcomed by both families, and a wedding date is set as Balachandra completes the UPSC exams with quiet determination.
Tragedy strikes when Balachandra’s father commits suicide after a protracted, ruinous legal battle that drains the family’s resources and leaves Balachandra with crushing debts to repay. The pressure intensifies as private moneylenders harass him, publicly shaming him and threatening legal action, threatening to undo all that Balachandra has achieved. In this desperate moment, Vikraman, Thilakan a well-connected contractor, proposes a dangerous arrangement: he will clear Balachandra’s debts if Balachandra agrees to marry his daughter, Rajeswari, commonly called Raji, Shanthi Krishna.
With a heavy heart, Balachandra contemplates the option, and after talking with Nandini, she urges him to accept the deal for the sake of the family. The couple’s romance is set aside as Balachandra enters a new, burdened marriage with Raji, and he begins the long, painful process of repaying the debts that once seemed insurmountable. Raji proves to be a proud, often cruel wife, and her arrogance strains the household. Balachandra’s new life is further complicated when Vikraman uses his position as Revenue Secretary to advance his friends’ interests, pressing Balachandra to cooperate even as he resists; in a moment of anger, Balachandra confronts both his wife and his father-in-law, and the fabric of his life starts to fray.
Seeking a moment of peace, Balachandra leaves home and retreats to the secrecy of a seaside resort. There, he befriends Eenashu, a jovial, wind-swept middle-aged man who keeps his spirit young through liquor, humor, and a refusal to surrender to sorrow; Innocent brings light to Balachandra’s burdened mind, helping him glimpse a different path forward. This respite is short-lived, however, as Shivadasa Menon, M G Soman Balachandra’s superior, learns that Vikraman is moving to press a Joint Divorce Petition and urges Balachandra to sign.
To Balachandra’s surprise, he discovers Nandini at a neighboring cottage in the same resort. She has grown into an internationally acclaimed writer and remains single, carrying memories of the years they shared. The old bond between Balachandra and Nandini slowly rekindles, and with Eenashu’s gentle influence, Balachandra finds a renewed sense of hope and love for Nandini without fully letting go of his obligations to Raji. The pair decide to live together again, but fate intervenes when Raji, her children, and the truth of their past collide with their present.
In a poignant twist, Raji realizes her mistakes and asks Balachandra to forgive her and to return to their family. Nandini, aware of the complexity of love and duty, understands the painful reality: Balachandra cannot abandon his responsibilities, and she must let go, even as she cherishes the memories of their shared life. Balachandra makes the heart-wrenching decision to stay with Raji and the children, choosing the welfare of the family over his own happiness. The film closes on a bittersweet note: Balachandra heads back into his duties with Raji, while Nandini begins a new life, forever marked by the love they shared and the sacrifices that defined their paths.
