Santhosh and Seetha have a son named Surendhar. In Seetha’s childhood, Sumathi enjoyed a palatial life and a luxurious upbringing, but the family’s fortunes change when her father’s textile business collapses and the family sinks into poverty.
Seetha moves to the house opposite Sumathi’s, leaving her husband and son back in their city to finish their training. Sumathi, who becomes Seetha’s new help, is drawn to Seetha’s modesty, kindness, and sensible nature, and Seetha hires her as a maid. Over the following days, Seetha discovers that the house she has moved into was once owned by Sumathi’s family, which deepens her impression of Sumathi. Sumathi also writes novels, one of which she shares with Seetha.
For Seetha, the stories spark a vivid fantasy: she imagines her own son and Sumathi as the characters in the tale—Sridhar and Subhathra—and this fictional frame leads her to a surprising longing. She comes to believe that Sumathi could be the daughter-in-law she desires, and at first Sumathi is startled, but she accepts the idea with unexpected warmth.
Seetha, in a moment of privacy, communicates her plan by phone to her husband and son, keeping Sumathi’s identity a secret so the revelation can be a surprise when they meet. Tragedy strikes before they can arrive, however, as Seetha dies in an accident. Her death leaves a suspenseful question hanging in the air: who has Seetha chosen as her daughter-in-law?
After Seetha’s death, Surendhar vows to find and marry the girl his mother had identified. Because Sumathi is a maid and far poorer than Seetha’s family, she does not reveal that she is the chosen one. Sampooranam, Surendhar’s close friend who moves into their home, begins to investigate in hopes of uncovering the girl selected by Seetha. Santhosh, always eager to secure a comfortable future for his son, pushes toward aligning Surendhar with a wealthy girl, a choice that starkly contrasts with Seetha’s wishes.
The story twists and turns until Sampooranam uncovers the truth: Sumathi is the girl Seetha envisioned. His key evidence is Sumathi’s published novel—the very book she shared with Seetha. With this revelation, Surendhar marries Sumathi, receiving the blessings of Santhosh and Sampooranam. The tale closes with Sumathi recalling Seetha’s assurance that she had always pictured Sumathi as her son’s wife, and the memory of Seetha’s guiding vision lives on in their union.
