Sumathi enjoyed a palatial house and a luxurious life during her childhood. Her father later loses his textile business and the family sinks into poverty. This dramatic shift foreshadows the challenges Sumathi would face later in life.

Seetha relocates to the house opposite Sumathi's residence. Her husband and son remain back in their city, waiting to finish their training. Seeing Sumathi's wise and sensible character, Seetha hires her as her maid.
