Near the end of the 1940s, Eloise Winters is trapped in a loveless marriage with businessman Lewis Wengler. A surprise visit from her old friend Mary Jane unsettles the quiet, and a heated argument about divorce and the future of Ramona on the line follows when Lewis returns home. The sight of one of her old dresses stirs a memory of her first love, and the film shifts into a retrospective flashback that peels back the years to reveal how choices echoed through time.
In 1939, in busy New York City, student Eloise Winters meets Walt Dreiser at a student party. What begins as a casual encounter quickly reveals Eloise’s desire for a lasting relationship, not a fleeting romance, and Walt’s pursuit gradually deepens into genuine love as they navigate the city’s pace and possibilities together.
World War II intervenes when Walt is drafted into the United States Army Air Force. Before leaving overseas, he asks Eloise to spend a night with him. She hesitates, but ultimately agrees, and soon discovers she is pregnant. To preserve the ideal of a loving union, she decides to withhold the news from Walt, hoping to secure a marriage rooted in true feeling rather than circumstance.
Before a practice mission, Walt writes a letter to Eloise expressing his wish to marry her. Tragically, he dies in a plane crash shortly after takeoff, leaving Eloise with a bitter reality and little time to mourn before the path she must choose.
Facing the consequences, Eloise marries Lewis Wengler to legitimize the child, a decision that also ends the close friendship with Mary Jane, who had long cared for Lewis. The weight of the past becomes a defining thread that shapes the woman she has become.
Back in the present, Eloise awakens with a clarified resolve drawn from memory. She envisions a practical arrangement: Lewis and Mary Jane should live together and share custody of Ramona. Yet when they observe Eloise’s affectionate bond with Ramona, Mary Jane urges her to keep the child close, and in the end, Eloise remains beside her daughter, choosing family over rupture.
