Shahina was forced to marry Rasaq because he wanted to remarry specifically to obtain dowry money to fund his trip to the Middle East for work. The matchmaker Hassan Moyeen pressured Shahina's family, her mother Saphia and uncle Abdu, to accept the proposal. Although Shahina wanted to continue her studies, the elders viewed her resistance as deviant behavior and pressured her to comply with the arranged marriage.

Rasaq decided to remarry purely for financial reasons. He already had a wife named Wahida and a child, but he wanted to travel to the Middle East in search of work. By marrying Shahina, he could receive dowry money from her family, which would provide the funds needed for his travel expenses.

Rasaq forced Wahida, his first wife, to administer sedatives to Shahina. While Shahina was asleep and unable to consent, Rasaq took advantage of her vulnerable state and consummated the marriage. When Shahina woke up, she was shocked and enraged by what had happened.
