Woman of Fire

In South Korea, a man named Dong-sik [Nam Koong-won] and a woman named Myeong-ja [Youn Yuh-jung] are found dead near a poultry farm, each with multiple stab wounds. The police initially treat the scene as a robbery, but the investigation quickly gravitates toward Jeong-suk [Jeon Gye-hyeon], the wife of Dong-sik, as a key person of interest. The case tightens its grip on their tangled lives when a confession from a crazed man points to a robbery motive, yet unsettling discrepancies begin to surface, including a letter that appears to be from the deceased woman.

As the narrative unfolds, the film digs into the backstory surrounding Myeong-ja. She had come to work for free on the farm run by the family, choosing it as a place to recover from a past trauma linked to an attacker who forced her to leave her rural roots. Unlike the wife, Myeong-ja shows ease in handling pests—she is not squeamish about rats, even calmly squashing one beneath her shoe. Her motives, however, appear modest: she does not chase money so much as the idea of finding a suitable husband. The man at the center of the farm’s life, Dong-sik, is a songwriter who writes under the weight of constant, would-be female suitors that press in from every side.

When Jeong-suk has to travel for business, she entrusts Myeong-ja with guarding Dong-sik, a move that intensifies the sense of danger and dependency weaving through their household. Tensions escalate in a pivotal moment when Myeong-ja intervenes to stop a romantic advance from Hye-suk toward Dong-sik. But that moment backfires in a shocking turn, as she ends up in the arms of a drunken man who rapes her, mistaking her for Hye-suk. The consequences are swift and brutal: Myeong-ja becomes pregnant, a development that fractures the fragile balance within the family. When Jeong-suk discovers the pregnancy, she compels an abortion, adding another layer of coercion and hurt to an already volatile situation.

From there, vengeance threads its way through the lives of those involved. Myeong-ja’s response is to wield the knowledge she now holds like blackmail, using it to torment those who have tormented her and their unborn child. The web grows more lethal when another figure, drawn into the couple’s dangerous game, is found dead by blunt force trauma. The emotional and moral stakes rise as the couple, exhausted by their ongoing manipulations, decide to take a lethal drink together—rat poison—in a bid to end the cycle. Yet fate intervenes as Dong-sik somehow makes his way to his wife and asks her to stage his death as if he had been stabbed, a grim request that leaves the truth even more entangled.

In the film’s final moments, the tension finally spills out of the police station and into the street. The wife appears outside the station, collapsing under the weight of everything that has happened. In a stark image that lingers, she loses a shoe as it washes away in a gutter, a symbolic echo of everything left behind and the vanished sense of certainty that once defined their lives. The closing beats leave viewers with a heavy sense of consequence and unanswered questions, underscoring how a single act of violence can ripple through a family, a community, and a string of intertwined fates.
