A spacecraft meets a tragic fate as it crashes into a lake during the Vendel era in Scandinavia, set between 550 and 790 AD. Among the wreckage, a lone occupant—a humanoid alien—manages to survive. This alien retrieves a distress beacon along with a computer that informs him that he is on Earth, which had been abandoned by his people as a “seed” colony. The computer rapidly downloads the local Norse language and cultural knowledge directly into his mind.
Emerging from the debris is Kainan (portrayed by James Caviezel), a soldier from a distant world, and he soon realizes that he is not alone. A perilous alien stowaway known as a Moorwen is also present, a creature that poses a significant threat. Before Kainan can engage the Moorwen, he is captured by the fierce Viking warrior Wulfric and taken to a local village ruled by King Rothgar. The political landscape is further complicated by Freya, the strong-willed daughter of Rothgar, who is given in marriage to Wulfric but is adamantly opposed to the union, fearing that Wulfric will mirror the tyranny of his father.
Tensions rise as King Rothgar fears that the neighboring chieftain Gunnar will blame Wulfric for the recent destruction of his village, attributing it to conflict from the past. Under interrogation, Kainan presents himself as a hunter from the north, claiming he is in pursuit of a dragon. That very night, an unseen creature unleashes havoc on the village, leading to numerous casualties. Kainan identifies the attacker as the Moorwen, a predatory entity responsible for his ship’s crash and a menace to both men and animals.
A hunting party sets out to track down this creature, and during one confrontation, Kainan slays a ferocious bear, earning the respect and acceptance of the Viking tribe. As the Moorwen continues to devastate the Viking lands, Kainan successfully allies with the warriors, especially as its ferocity triggers an aggressive response from King Gunnar, played by Ron Perlman. As Kainan is integrated into Viking society and proves his loyalty by saving Rothgar’s life, he forms a deeper bond with Freya. He shares with her the tragic history of the Moorwen, revealing that it was a consequence of his people’s invasion of its home planet, where Kainan lost his own family at the hands of this creature.
As Kainan and Freya grow closer, she presents him with a family sword, believing he is the man destined to wield it. With a united front, Kainan and the Vikings devise a daring plan to capture the Moorwen using a hidden pit filled with whale oil. Nevertheless, the creature escapes the trap and unleashes more terror upon the village, leading to devastating losses, including the deaths of both Kings. With morale plummeting and many warriors abandoning the village, Kainan, alongside Freya and the tribal remnants, stands ready to face the Moorwen in a final confrontation.
Utilizing remnants of his spacecraft to forge weapons, Kainan turns the tide against the Moorwen. In a climactic battle within the caves beneath the village, Freya proves her bravery by wielding one of the newly crafted swords and striking down a young Moorwen. The battle intensifies with a dramatic encounter against the adult Moorwen, where both Kainan and Freya confront it courageously. Ultimately, Kainan manages to topple the creature over a cliff, securing victory for the tribe at a great cost.
As the emergency beacon whirs to life, indicating that Kainan’s people are en route to retrieve him, he faces a pivotal decision. In a gesture of love and loyalty towards his newfound family and home, he destroys the beacon, choosing to remain on Earth. His story culminates in a new beginning as he marries Freya, receives the kingship from the dying Wulfric, and takes his place as a leader of the tribe, ready to embrace the future.
