In a future where parts of society have fractured into violence, homelessness, and turf wars, a select group of immortals holds onto resources and advanced technology. This cadre includes Methos, a centuries-old survivor; Reggie Weller, a skilled computer hacker; Zai Jie, a formidable immortal with speed and power; and Cardinal Giovanni, a Vatican representative who weighs mortal and immortal destinies alike. Together, they hunt for the legendary Source of Immortality, a force said to grant ultimate power to whoever controls it.
Zai Jie appears to have found a possible lead, guiding the group toward the island that might conceal the Source. But tragedy strikes on holy ground when the Guardian, an eerie, supremely swift immortal protector of the Source, reaches him and kills him before the others can intervene. With Zai Jie gone, the Guardian shifts the search toward living allies, and Methos enlists his old friend Joe Dawson to locate Duncan MacLeod, a legendary warrior who has drifted far from civilization.
Duncan MacLeod has become estranged from Anna Teshemka, his mortal wife who chose to leave him because his immortality separated them in every possible way. While wandering the wastelands, Duncan is attacked by the Guardian, a confrontation that leaves him battered but not broken. Joe Dawson soon persuades him to reunite with Methos’s group, and the pair meet at a monastery where the Elder, an ancient being who might illuminate the path to the Source, awaits. There they discover Anna Teshemka has appeared with visions tied to the Source, suggesting a deeper connection between the mortal world and the immortal struggle.
A legend from ancient times tells how the Source was found by a trio of immortals; two of them were cursed when the Guardian slayed the Protector, one becoming the new Guardian and another turning into the endlessly decaying Elder. The third is implied to have been reborn as Anna. The Elder warns that the closer they get to the Source, the more the immortals will weaken and risk losing their gifts. The sense of peril deepens when the Guardian tracks them to the monastery and attacks [Joe Dawson], forcing Duncan to intervene. Duncan’s valiant stand on holy ground earns a momentary victory when he hurls his katana at the Guardian, but the weapon is broken, and Joe is slain. Grief and resolve harden the remaining group as they press toward the Source, which is said to lie on a cannibal island off the Baltic coast near Lithuania.
Guided by Anna’s visions, they navigate hostile terrain and marauding locals. Duncan discovers two butterfly daggers and adopts them as his new weapons, adapting to the brutal realities of their journey. After a perilous night at a deserted house, the Guardian closes in on Reggie, whose wounds stop healing near the Source, and the healer’s life is cut short. The loss further sharpens Duncan and Methos’s bond as they realize a pivotal truth: the expression “there can be only one” does not mean one immortal will claim the Prize for all time. Instead, it points to the idea that only one immortal can claim the Source’s full power.
At a roadblock, the group is captured by cannibals, who celebrate their apparent victory as the Guardian frees Anna Teshemka and compels her to accompany him to the Source. Cardinal Giovanni escapes, and a faltering sense of destiny leads him to believe that he is “the One.” He abandons Methos and Duncan to face the Guardian alone, but Duncan and Methos stage a daring rescue, and Methos concludes that Duncan is truly destined to be the One because of his incorruptible heart. A bold distraction—Methos riding a horse to misdirect the cannibals—gives Duncan the chance to pursue Anna into the heart of the Source’s sanctum.
The Guardian is defeated when Duncan, matching the entity’s extraordinary speed and strength, shatters its defenses and buries it beneath the earth up to its neck. The Guardian, unable to transfer the curse, vanishes in a blaze of light, screaming that he is cursed forever. With the Guardian gone and the mortal-immortal balance unsettled, Duncan joins Anna Teshemka on the edge of the Source. Anna seems to commune with the Source itself, and a shimmering energy barrier blocks Duncan from joining her as she completes the final connection. In a climactic struggle, Duncan’s purity of heart proves stronger, and he becomes one with the Source, their union sealing the cycle of immortality.
The final image lingers on the idea of new beginnings and unknown futures as the story closes, leaving the sense that the Source’s power has reshaped the lives of everyone involved and hinted at the profound consequences of immortality for both the living and the dying.
