Othello (1955) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Othello (1955), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Othello [Sergey Bondarchuk], a fearless Moor and general of the Venetian Republic, anchors a tragedy that delves into courage, loyalty, and the fragility of trust. The film follows his commanding presence and the way his decisions ripple through a world where honor and affection collide, delivering a story that is as intimate as it is epic.

Desdemona [Irina Skobtseva], the daughter of Brabantio [Yevgeni Teterin], is drawn to Othello’s tales of peril and perseverance. Their bond grows into a secret marriage, a union Desdemona openly defends by declaring her love for Othello, even as her father resists. The revelation comes swiftly, delivered by both the envious Roderigo [Yevgeni Vesnik] and the spiteful Iago [Andrei Popov], and it is brought before the Doge of Venice [Mikhail Troyanovsky]. This moment marks the beginning of a chain reaction that will test every voice in the room.

As a Turkish fleet looms over Venice, Othello is dispatched to Cyprus, where he earns a decisive victory that confirms his prowess and earns him the unwavering loyalty of his soldiers. This victory elevates his status and deepens the trust surrounding him, setting the stage for a storm of jealousy to take root.

Iago, driven by ambition and resentment, launches a meticulous campaign to undermine Othello’s trusted lieutenant, Cassio [Vladimir Soshalsky]. He manipulates events to ruin Cassio’s reputation while presenting himself as a loyal confidant, a disguise that lets him pull strings from behind the scenes. His scheming is careful and patient, turning small opportunities into a widening breach.

Manipulation broadens as Iago exploits Desdemona’s kindness—she speaks up for Cassio’s reinstatement—planting seeds of doubt in Othello’s mind. The seeds sprout into growing suspicion as Iago crafts a narrative that seems to justify fear, suspicion, and possessiveness. A crucial piece in his deception is Desdemona’s handkerchief—her misplaced token of affection—which he uses as supposed evidence to inflame Othello’s doubts and deepen the rift between them.

Othello, now consumed by jealousy, strangles Desdemona. Emilia [Antonina Maksimova], Iago’s wife, steps forward and reveals her husband’s treachery, prompting Iago to murder Emilia in a fit of rage. As the truth comes to light, Othello, overwhelmed with grief and remorse, takes his own life. The final image is a sober testament to the tragedy: a funeral ship bearing the bodies of Othello and Desdemona sails into the sunset, while Iago faces judgment for his calculated treachery.
