Jennifer Stanton is a rebellious teenager navigating a household filled with strictness and lack of understanding. Her father, William Stanton, as portrayed by Daniel Baldwin, is excessively overprotective and often disapproves of Jennifer’s friends, her manner of dress, and her choices. His attitude extends to the point of causing her boyfriend, Brad, portrayed by David Lascher, to feel intimidated and eventually break up with her. Her mother, Susan Stanton, played by Isabella Hofmann, appears more resigned, often siding against Jennifer, which only deepens the teenager’s frustration.

One afternoon at a gas station, Jennifer encounters Nick Ryan, played by Jeremy Jordan, and they quickly develop a strong bond. Despite her desire for independence, Jennifer keeps her relationship with Nick a secret from her parents. Nick carries a troubled reputation, having previously served time in jail for an assault charge, which adds tension and suspicion to their budding relationship.

Their clandestine relationship faces an immediate obstacle when Jennifer’s parents unexpectedly return home early from a dinner date and catch them in bed together. This leads to her father, William, chasing Nick out of the house in an angry confrontation. Following this incident, Jennifer is grounded for the entire school year, and her parents restrict her freedom severely—she is prohibited from driving, hanging out with friends, and her mother explicitly states she will now be responsible for taking Jennifer to and from school. This sequence of punishments, combined with her father’s open disapproval, only grows Jennifer’s resentment toward her parents.

Despite these restrictions, Jennifer continues to secretly meet with Nick. During one such meeting, Nick visits her house to apologize for the previous night and confesses his love for her. However, William dismisses Nick, telling him to leave the property. The situation escalates when Brad criticizes William for his harsh behavior, especially after noticing Jennifer’s eye, which she had lied about, claiming William hit her (though she had merely applied makeup). William, furious and sensing trouble, threatens to report Nick for statutory rape and warns him to stay away. Later, William discovers vandalism on his car, leading to police involvement, and Nick is questioned but denies any wrongdoing.

Overhearing her parents discuss options—including possibly sending Jennifer away or using police contacts to keep Nick away—Jennifer becomes desperate. She convinces Nick to retrieve his grandfather’s pistol, and in a horrifying turn, she urges him to kill her parents to gain ultimate freedom. Nick, conflicted but influenced by Jennifer’s insistence, plans the murder. Meanwhile, Jennifer pretends to her friends at school that she and Nick have broken up, hoping to maintain her facade. She gradually gains her parents’ trust by presenting herself as the perfect daughter, and eventually, her parents allow her to attend a slumber party.

In an act of reckless desperation, Jennifer sneaks away from the party and meets Nick, who is hesitant but agrees to go through with her plan. At the house, Nick experiences a moment of doubt, but Jennifer persuades him that it’s the only way to be truly free. He proceeds to shoot and kill William and Susan while they sleep. The following morning, Jennifer moves in with her grandmother and reconnects with Brad. She then secretly tips off the police with information that leads to Nick’s arrest and the recovery of the murder weapon.

Though the case appears closed with Nick in custody, Detective Daniels, played by Eric Laneuville, suspects that Jennifer knows more than she admits. When pressed, she claims Nick was motivated by her parents’ restrictions. Further investigation reveals her diary, which indicates she manipulated Nick into committing the murders to escape her parents’ control, motivated by her desire to be with Brad.

Her best friend, Karen Winkler, portrayed by Meadow Sisto, uncovers Jennifer’s diary and discusses her suspicions with Nick in jail. Karen confronts Jennifer about her involvement, but Jennifer retaliates by accusing Nick of the murders and threatening to implicate Karen as well. During Nick’s trial, Jennifer falsely testifies that Nick harassed her, but Brad manipulates her into admitting her role in her parents’ deaths, leading to her arrest.

In the end, Jennifer Stanton faces juvenile court proceedings, and her actions are revealed to be driven by her rebellious nature and desire for independence. Meanwhile, Nick Ryan remains incarcerated, serving time for the murders she orchestrated. The film closes with a sobering reminder of how destructive lies and desperation can become when mixed with youth and rebellion.
