Othello (1922) Plot Summary Explained
- Release, runtime and language
- 1922 · 79 mins
- Directed by
- Dimitri Buchowetzki
- Starring
- Emil Jannings, Theodor Loos, Friedrich Kühne, Werner Krauss, Magnus Stifter, Ica von Lenkeffy
Although silent, the 1922 German Othello feels more operatic than faithful to Shakespeare. Emil Jannings towers as Othello, lacking subtlety. Werner Krauss, known from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is the scheming Iago, and Lya de Putti (Lea von Lenkeffy) plays the tragic Desdemona. The lavish production offers striking visual delights despite its loose adaptation.
