In January 2007, Leena Klammer, a psychiatric patient, meticulously orchestrates her escape from the Saarne Institute. She seduces a guard, leading to his murder, and cleverly hides in the vehicle of an unsuspecting art therapist named Anna.

After successfully escaping, Leena breaks into Anna's home, where she brutally kills her. This marks the beginning of Leena's path towards assuming a new identity.

While searching for information on missing girls, Leena discovers a striking resemblance to Esther Albright, a wealthy girl who vanished in 2003. Intrigued, Leena decides to pose as Esther to manipulate those who might believe her story.

Leena, adopting the identity of Esther, meets a Russian officer and claims her parents are in the United States. This encounter is crucial in her elaborate scheme to integrate herself into a new life.

In Darien, Connecticut, Allen and Tricia Albright struggle to cope with their daughter's disappearance. Their emotional turmoil is compounded when Detective Donnan informs them that a girl resembling Esther has been found.

Tricia flies to Moscow for an emotional reunion with Esther. However, her excitement is soon overshadowed by suspicions when she notices inconsistencies in Esther's memories and abilities.

Leena begins to bond with Allen over their shared love for painting. As their relationship deepens, Leena plots to drive a wedge between Allen and his wife, Tricia, setting the stage for more sinister plans.

During a charity gala hosted by Tricia, Detective Donnan stumbles upon a vinyl record belonging to Esther, revealing Leena's fingerprints. This discovery ignites a series of confrontations that threaten to expose Leena's true identity.

In a tense encounter, Leena violently attacks Donnan, ultimately stabbing him to death. Tricia arrives just in time but, instead of helping, shoots Donnan, revealing a shocking twist about her awareness of Leena's deception.

After revealing her true self to Allen, who is horrified, Leena pushes him to his death. Disguised once more as Esther, she escapes the burning house, leaving behind a trail of chaos and deception as she heads for an orphanage.
