Gopi is an idealistic yet resourceful youth who dreams of a stable life and a career in music. He falls in love with Maha, and his loyalty to friends and family is tested by financial desperation and a violent turn when he stabs the moneylender to save his sister. His choices lead to consequences including marriage and arrest.

Hari is a harmonium player who dreams of becoming a film music composer. He is Gopi's friend, practical and supportive, but also experiences frustration when opportunities slip away. He struggles to make money and ends up homeless; at the end, he loses his harmonium and descends into chaos.

Mahalakshmi, Maha, is the daughter of the new neighbors, a kind-hearted student who becomes the beloved of Gopi. She embodies hope but is pulled between parental expectations and her love for Gopi. She ultimately agrees to marry Gopi and becomes entangled in the ensuing tragedy.

Prabhu is a college student who initially befriends Maha and pursues a relationship. He is impulsive and proud, slapping his principal and facing dismissal. After confessing his love, Maha reveals she never loved him; he spirals into guilt and dies by his own hand.

Singam is Mani's son who sacrifices himself to help bear travel costs for his father. He meets with an accident while trying to help, highlighting the fragility and duty within a struggling family.

The moneylender is a cruel figure who finances debt and speaks ill of Singam, triggering Gopi's wrath. His murder becomes a pivotal event that drives the plot toward tragedy and arrest.

Mani is a kind-hearted rickshaw puller who shelters Gopi and Hari when they are evicted. He shows generosity and helps the friends through a period of hardship, embodying loyalty and resilience while facing his own burdens.
