Journey of Hope

In a remote, impoverished village in Eastern Turkey, the Öztürk family tries to hold onto hope as life grows increasingly hard. The story centers on the father, Haydar Sener, with Necmettin Çobanoğlu, the mother, Meryem, with Nur Sürer, and their seven children, among them a young son named Mehmet Ali, who is played by Emin Sivas. Haydar works tirelessly as a farmer, but the economic and political turmoil around them makes every day a struggle to feed the family and keep their futures intact. The film follows his yearning for a safer, more stable life for his wife and kids, a dream that grows louder as time passes.

Seeking to secure a better future, Haydar makes a bold and perilous choice: he sets out for Switzerland, where he has heard promising stories of work and opportunity. He does not embark on this journey alone for long; with the hesitant but supportive presence of Siti, he begins a grueling trek toward a new life. The plan is simple in intent but fraught with danger—reach Europe, find work, and send for the rest of the family to join them later. The pair depart the village with heavy backpacks and heavier hopes, knowing the road ahead is dangerous and uncertain.

The journey first leads them across a border into Greece, and the path is anything but easy. They encounter treacherous terrain, harsh weather, and the unpredictable actions of smugglers who command the route. Along the way, they encounter other refugees, each bearing their own stories of loss and longing, weaving a larger mosaic of desperation and resilience. The migration route becomes a test of endurance, endurance not just of the body but of the will to persevere in the face of fear and fatigue.

As the journey pushes onward toward Switzerland, the smugglers abandon the family during a dangerous crossing over the Alps. The blizzard rages, and the family is separated in the whiteout. Meryem injures her leg and is rescued by police, while Haydar and Mehmet Ali are left to navigate the freezing landscape, trying to survive the long hours of snow and cold. The brutal conditions strip away the dreams of a quick resolution, laying bare the fragility of life on the margins.

When night falls, the unthinkable happens: Mehmet Ali succumbs to hypothermia. The harsh silence of the snowy world is broken only by the dawn, when Haydar and Mehmet Ali are found, and the family is briefly reunited in the cold light of morning. At the hospital, Meryem learns that their son has not survived, a blow that deepens the strain on the already fragile family unit. Haydar’s troubles are far from over, as he is taken into custody and the Swiss authorities begin to debate the couple’s possible deportation back to Turkey.

The film presents not just a journey across borders, but a meditation on family, loss, and the crushing weight of displacement. It portrays how hope can be both a lifeline and a burden, how love drives people to take extraordinary risks, and how, even in moments of reunion, a family can still be shattered by forces beyond their control. Through stark landscapes and restrained, compassionate storytelling, the narrative captures the emotional economy of a migrant family’s pursuit of safety and a future that may remain just out of reach.
