A young woman, Panchali [Radikaa Sarathkumar], steps off the Eastbound Train named ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’ and lands in the strict village of Thamaraikulam, where rules and customs shape daily life. There, she is taken in by her sister Karuthamma [Ganthimathi] and brother-in-law Ramaiah [Goundamani]. Panchali informs Karuthamma that their mother died a couple of days ago, and Ramaiah’s gaze hardens as he begins to eye her with a troubling interest.
In the village, Paranjothi [Sudhakar] is an unemployed graduate who lives with his father Maruthu, a barber, and his sister Kanniyamma. Maruthu, steeped in old-fashioned village wisdom, brands Paranjothi a good-for-nothing in the eyes of the neighborhood, a fate he shares with many in their circle. After Kanniyamma marries, she leaves her birth home to live with her husband’s family, underscoring the changing tides in the family’s dynamics.
As days pass, Panchali and Paranjothi slowly fall in love, their bond growing quietly amid the skepticism of the community. One day, the villagers spot Paranjothi running after Panchali, and the rumor mill churns accusations of misbehavior. At the gram panchayat, the assembly condemns Paranjothi, insisting he sought to harm Panchali. The tension narrows to a clash between tradition and desire, with only Pattalathaar, the retired military man [Vijayan], and [Janagaraj] as a Panchayat member, offering reluctant support while the others stand ready to condemn.
The verdict is harsh: Maruthu shaves Paranjothi’s hair, and he is paraded on a donkey through the streets; Ramaiah exerts pressure on Karuthamma, forcing her to burn Panchali’s arm with a hot piece of wood. The public humiliation weighs heavily, and Maruthu ultimately ends his life in the village lake, a tragedy that haunts the community.
Paranjothi decides to leave the town, promising Panchali that he will return to marry her. He boards the last compartment of the Kizhakke Pogum Rail, carrying a quiet message of hope for the future. In the city, after a series of interviews, he finally lands a decent job, a step toward building a life beyond the village’s walls.
Back in Thamaraikulam, the court scene lingers as Ramaiah presses his claim that Karuthamma is barren and asserts his own wish to marry Panchali, complicating the lovers’ prospects and amplifying the village’s patriarchal pressures. A sudden downpour strikes the area, and the people cling to age-old beliefs to halt the rain: a virgin woman must walk naked around the village at sunrise.
When Panchali is chosen for the rite, Paranjothi returns to the village and finds her in the vulnerable moment. He covers her with a garment, and together they flee the judgmental gaze of the others. Pattalathaar offers a measure of help by stalling the crowd, though his intervention proves fatal. Undeterred, the lovers seize the chance to escape on the moving Kizhakke Pogum Rail, evading the villagers and setting off toward an uncertain future together.
