Nancy Drew, portrayed by Emma Roberts, embarks on a thrilling adventure when she and her father, Carson, played by Tate Donovan, relocate from their familiar surroundings of River Heights to a seemingly idyllic yet mysterious neighborhood in Los Angeles. The move is prompted by the tragic demise of the iconic movie star, Dehlia Draycott, whose life was filled with glamor but ultimately led to an unsolved murder that casts a long shadow over the house they temporarily occupy. As much as her father wishes for her to take a break from her sleuthing and embrace the norm of high school life, Nancy finds herself increasingly drawn into the enigma surrounding Dehlia’s life and death.
Struggling to acclimate to her new school, she faces the challenges of fitting in and making friends, forging an unexpected bond with a boy named Corky, who is played by Josh Flitter. But it soon becomes clear to Nancy that her true calling lies in unraveling mysteries, not in navigating the mundane teenage social landscape. This epiphany ignites a fire within her, compelling her to dig deeper into the intrigues that surround Dehlia’s story.
Through her investigations, Nancy uncovers whispers about Dehlia having given up a child for adoption and learns that a certain “Jane Brighton,” played by Rachael Leigh Cook, is the only remaining heir to Dehlia’s mysteriously vanished will. However, this path is fraught with danger; after receiving a chilling phone call warning her to abandon her quest, she decides to enlist the help of Dashiel Biedermeyer, a business associate of her father’s, portrayed by Barry Bostwick. Biedermeyer, a lawyer for the Draycott estate, becomes a key figure in Nancy’s escalating detective work.
Adding to the excitement, Nancy’s father surprises her with a beautiful blue Roadster as an early birthday gift. Completing this surprise is her boyfriend, Ned, played by Max Thieriot, a supportive presence who shares her adventurous spirit and joins her in the investigation. As Nancy’s relationship with Ned deepens, Corky becomes increasingly envious, striving to capture Nancy’s attention. Together, they explore an underground passageway leading from their home to the basement of the neighbor’s property, rented by the enigmatic groundskeeper Leshing, portrayed by Marshall Bell.
The plot thickens when Jane, in distress and panic, arrives at Nancy’s doorstep, claiming that her daughter has been wrongfully taken from her. Jane reveals the harrowing truth—that after Nancy’s initial visit, a threatening man knocked on her door, adding urgency to Nancy’s pursuit of justice. Tasked with defending Jane, Carson reluctantly agrees to take on her case, leading to Jane moving in with the Drews. While soaking in one of Dehlia Draycott’s films, inspiration strikes Nancy—and she deduces that the elusive will may very well be hidden within a prop from the movie.
Amidst the thrill of her discoveries, Nancy’s excitement is short-lived. After locating the will in a quaint antique shop in Chinatown, she exuberantly calls her father, gleefully announcing her find, uttering, > “I’ve got the evidence to stop the bad guys!” But her triumph quickly turns into peril when she is ambushed and subdued with chloroform. The powerful drug renders her unconscious, and she awakens in a deserted theater, setting off an adrenaline-fueled chase filled with danger and unexpected twists.
As events unfold, Nancy finds herself embroiled in a frantic car chase with the very thugs who sought to silence her, ultimately leading to a harrowing crash and a stay in the emergency room. With her father and Biedermeyer by her side, Nancy reveals her secret sleuthing activities and the truth surrounding Draycott’s hidden will to an understandably alarmed Carson. It’s then that Biedermeyer’s true colors are revealed; he is, in fact, the one who was disinherited by Dehlia, stirring up suspicions about his role in her demise.
Determined, Nancy makes a bold move, escaping the confines of Biedermeyer’s car while risking everything in her quest for the truth. What follows is a climactic confrontation where unexpected allies emerge, leading to the restoration of justice. The will is safeguarded, Jane reclaims her daughter, and the Draycott estate is transformed into a sanctuary for single mothers.
As the mystery closes, Nancy reflects on her journey, a mix of somberness and satisfaction washes over her. However, the allure of adventure calls once more when she receives a mysterious phone call regarding a new case in Scotland. With her spirit undeterred, Nancy eagerly embraces the next chapter, ready to dive into another thrilling escapade.
