As the shocking news of her partner’s tragic death echoes worldwide, agent Karen Bentley finds herself unexpectedly embroiled in a perilous mission tasked with delivering a crucial flight plan from Europe to Chicago. These plans, ingeniously hidden within a miniature scorpion medallion that she wears around her neck, are pivotal for launching a hundred American bomber planes into action. With this overwhelming responsibility weighing heavily on her shoulders, Karen heads to New York City, where she cleverly eludes enemy agents by blending in at a bustling variety theatre.
In this vibrant setting, she captivates Larry Haines, an actor whose charisma is second only to his charming penguin sidekick, Percy. With Larry’s contract for a Hollywood film providing an ideal cover, Karen cunningly slips the medallion into his possession right before he boards a train. Unbeknownst to him, this seemingly harmless actor is now unknowingly tasked with carrying an essential piece of intelligence across the country.
Meanwhile, German agents Mme. Stephanie Runick and Dr. Hugo Streger are hot on Larry’s trail; their suspicious antics raise eyebrows among fellow passengers as they track the unlikely pair to Albany. At this crucial juncture, Karen boards the train, her gaze locked on Larry as he anxiously paces the corridor.
When the train halts in Chicago, Karen seizes the moment to steal Larry’s suitcase, which now contains the medallion-adorned jacket, and makes a daring escape. However, fate leads her to the scene of yet another murder, requiring her to think on her feet and redirect her quest to Los Angeles.
As tensions escalate, Karen is compelled to reveal her true identity to Larry. Initially bewildered by her sudden appearances and disappearances, he ultimately emerges as a valuable ally. Together, they devise a clever ruse to mislead their pursuers, feigning a domestic dispute that culminates in a staged, explosive argument, complete with simulated violence.
With law enforcement oblivious to their charade, Karen and Larry slip away from the scene, leaving the German agents—and their ominous plans—in their dust. As they navigate the intricate web of espionage and subterfuge, one truth becomes evident: their survival hinges on their ability to work together.
When they reunite in a police patrol car, the earlier tension between them dissipates, only to be reignited by the relentless chase of the law. The chaos is fueled by an anonymous tip-off from the German agents, accusing them of murdering a British operative—a shocking allegation that quickly captures media attention, with Larry’s reputation tarnished as the “love slayer.” Amidst their frantic efforts to evade capture, Karen and Larry find themselves irresistibly drawn to one another. In the midst of their tumultuous escape, they discover comfort in each other’s presence, eventually seeking refuge atop Union Hall for a brief moment of peaceful reflection.
However, their serenity is fleeting, as morning breaks to reveal that the authorities have once again caught sight of them. They quickly blend into a sightseeing tour bus, which they hijack, leading to an impromptu commandeering of a plane bound for Los Angeles. With their fuel reserves dwindling, they are forced to land in a remote area, where they face arrest for stealing food from a nearby farm.
After being imprisoned, their notorious status as the couple linked to the British operative’s murder precedes them. However, they manage an escape, only to find themselves pursued once more—this time by a relentless group of German agents. Utilizing a freight train as their means of getaway, they make a thrilling leap to Los Angeles. Upon arriving at the destination Karen was meant to reach, a chilling revelation awaits: it’s not a scheduled meeting, but a funeral parlor. The Germans have arrived first and have taken the British agent hostage.
Once again, Karen and Larry slip away from danger, seeking sanctuary at a nearby U.S. Air base. It is here that they successfully deliver the top-secret bomber plans, showcasing their adventure as a powerful testament to the resilience of love in the face of overwhelming adversity.
