On a dark, stormy night, the outlaw Injun Joe rendezvouses with Dr. Jonas Robinson to plan a crime. Meanwhile, Tom Sawyer, Benedikt Weber, runs away from home with his friends to work on steamboats, sparking a sequence of perilous adventures that ripple through Hannibal and beyond. The plan soon collides with fate when their raft smashes against a Mississippi rock, tossing Tom into the current and leaving him stranded until he is rescued by Huck Finn.
Tom is carried to safety by Huck, and the two boys stumble upon a curious wart-removal method: a dead cat taken to the graveyard at night. There, they stumble upon a tense discovery—Injun Joe and Muff Potter, the town drunk, are digging up Vic “One-Eyed” Murrell’s grave for Robinson. A treasure map is unearthed in the commotion, and Robinson makes a violent bid to seize it, assaulting Muff and Injun Joe in an attempt to claim the treasure for himself. He knocks Muff unconscious, but Injun Joe fights back and fatally stabs the doctor using Muff’s knife, setting off a chain of irreversible events.
The morning after, Muff Potter is charged with the murder. Tom and Huck swear an oath, binding themselves with a dark promise: if either betrays the other, they will drop dead and rot. The two boys embark on a desperate mission to locate the treasure map that could exonerate Muff and preserve their vow. In the meantime, Injun Joe locates the hidden treasure and orders his partner to hide it in a cave before burning the map, erasing the only evidence that might clear Muff’s name. With the map destroyed, Muff’s innocence becomes harder to prove, and the strain of secrecy begins to fracture Tom and Huck’s friendship, eventually pushing Huck away from Hannibal.
Injun Joe learns that Tom witnessed the murder, and he threatens the boy to keep silent. At Muff’s trial, Tom makes a pivotal choice: friendship with Muff and a sense of justice trump his oath to Huck, and he steps forward to tell the truth. Injun Joe makes a failed attempt to kill Tom and then vanishes from Hannibal, leaving the townspeople to rally around Tom as a hero for his bravery. Plans begin for a festival to celebrate the turn of events, even as Tom and Becky Thatcher’s budding romance looms in the background.
Huck, who has been sneaking around the festival, confronts Tom about breaking their oath, and then disappears again into the night. The following day, the festival turns into a new kind of danger as a group of children, including Tom and Becky, sneak into McDougal’s Cave and become lost. The sheriff and judge are alerted that Injun Joe has killed his partner, and Huck secretly attends the festival to follow the unfolding drama. Tom and Becky eventually find their way out, but not before discovering the cave’s hidden treasure—an encounter that raises the stakes even further. Tom begs Becky to fetch her father as the danger closes in.
Injun Joe locates Tom and makes another move to kill him, but Huck arrives just in time to intervene. Tom, cunning and brave, empties the treasure chest to threaten Joe and forces him to stumble into a fatal chasm—Joe plummets to his death as the cave looms around them. The boys’ reconciliation begins as they claim Injun Joe’s treasure and are hailed as heroes on the town’s front page. In the wake of the triumph, Widow Douglas chooses to adopt Huck, closing one chapter of their lives and opening another.
