In 1858 Saint Petersburg, the nationalist circle The Five gathers at Balakirev’s house. Young Modest Mussorgsky, a civil‑servant musician, shares his plan for an opera, then travels to the countryside, witnessing peasants’ misery and aristocratic violence. He tries to set Gogol’s The Marriage to music, struggles, and turns to Boris Godunov. After the Mariinsky rejects it and the group faces libel, Godunov finally premieres in 1874 to popular acclaim.
