In the sweltering summer of 1971, 10-year-old Charlotte 'Charlie' Brooks wakes up to the enticing aroma of sizzling pancakes. She discovers Mr. Church, their new cook, flipping eggs in the kitchen, a sight that both intrigues and confuses her.

As time passes, Charlie learns of her mother Marie's terminal breast cancer diagnosis. This news, coupled with the secrets shared between her mother and Mr. Church, creates a heavy atmosphere filled with unspoken fears.

In 1980, Charlie returns to Mr. Church’s doorstep, pregnant and seeking refuge from her studies. Their living arrangement brings new challenges as Charlie must respect Mr. Church's privacy while also relying on him for support.

While out one evening, Charlie faces a confrontation that leads to an accident, requiring medical attention. Larson, a familiar face from her past, helps her to the hospital, showcasing old friendships amidst new challenges.

Charlie gives birth to a baby girl named Isabel, affectionately called Izzy. Together, Charlie and Mr. Church navigate parenthood, blending their lives into an unexpected yet loving family unit.

Years pass, and by 1986, Charlie finds herself working as a waitress while raising Izzy. As Mr. Church’s health declines, she draws from their time together, applying the cooking lessons he imparted to her.

As Mr. Church's health deteriorates, Charlie faces the sorrow of losing him. His passing leaves a profound emptiness, compounded by the revelation of his secret life as a pianist at Jelly's nightclub.

After Mr. Church's death, Charlie wakes up to the familiar aroma of cooking, initially believing it to be him. Instead, she finds Izzy in the kitchen, discovering that she has inherited his culinary talent.
