In Los Angeles, 26-year-old architect George Matthews Gary Lockwood is floundering—unemployed and in debt, his live-in girlfriend, Gloria Alexandra Hay, is tired of him, and his car is already teetering on the edge of repossession.
Desperation pushes him to visit friends to borrow a small sum, but a chance sighting changes his day: a beautiful foreign woman in a white convertible captures his attention. He follows her to a hillside mansion, hoping for a breakthrough, only to be drawn back to the same mystery on the street when she disappears into a city block. His obsession grows, and he later discovers a tawdry model shop, a studio where customers can pose for erotic photographs. He books a session with Lola, Anouk Aimée though she shows little interest in his attentions. A phone call to his parents reveals a harsher reality: a draft notice has arrived, and he must report for Army duty the next week. For the first time, he confronts his own mortality.
At home, Gloria has moved on, landing a job with a new admirer who takes her out for the evening. George becomes consumed by the enigmatic foreigner, returning to the model shop to book another session. Lola reveals her true identity: she is French, named Cécile but working as Lola, and she carries her own burdens. Abandoned by her husband Michel for a female gambler named Jackie Demaistre, she is trying to earn enough money to return to France and be with her son.
Their night together is quiet yet revealing: over drinks and intimate talk at Lola’s apartment, they exchange stories of failed romances, dashed dreams, philosophy, and the fragility of life. Through these conversations, both find a renewed will to continue living, and George gives Lola the money he had borrowed to save his car. The next morning, the turn of events hits hard: he returns home to find Gloria packing to leave. He calls Lola, only to learn from her roommate that Lola has flown to Paris with enough cash for a plane ticket.
As the tow truck rips away his car, the moment crystallizes into a candid confession of longing and a stubborn faith in renewal. “I just wanted to tell her that I love her. I wanted her to know that I was going to begin again. It sounds stupid, I know. But a person can always try.”
