Anna, Kathryn Worth arrives in Tuscany to stay with her old school friend Verena, Mary Roscoe, and Verena’s family in their sun-warmed villa on the quiet edge of San Fabiano. She’s meant to be accompanied by her boyfriend, Alex, but tells Verena at the door that he had to stay in London at the last minute to work. Later, it becomes clear that Alex refused to come after a recent argument, leaving Anna to navigate the trip on her own terms.
The house divides itself into two loosely defined camps: the adults—Verena, her new husband Charlie, and Verena’s cousin George—and the teenagers—Verena’s kids Jack and Badge, Charlie’s son Archie, and George’s son Oakley. Anna finds herself drawn into the teenage circle, a decision she makes to escape the nagging weight of her own relationship worries. She throws herself into their casual, permissive mood, even promising not to tell their parents about their marijuana smoking and a drug- and drink-fueled accident in a borrowed car.
Tension simmers as Anna and Oakley, the most self-assured of the young crowd, share a wary and charged rapport. The flirtation rises and stalls in equal measure when Anna invites Oakley to spend the night, only for him to decline, leaving a moment of awkward, unfulfilled possibility hanging in the air. After that moment, Anna begins to drift away from the teenagers and from Verena’s circle, choosing instead to tell Verena about the car accident and the trouble it has caused.
The fallout mounts: a physical argument erupts between Oakley and his father, testing the fragile balance of the villa’s social order. When Anna apologizes to Oakley for not sharing things sooner, he bluntly says he has nothing to say to her, and the teenagers echo his rejection. Feeling out of place with both age groups, Anna leaves the villa and checks into a hotel, a choice that marks a temporary fracture in the gathered family.
Verena finds her and they reconcile after Anna opens up about a painful, intimate truth she has only recently confronted: the reality that she may never bear a child. Reassured by this new honesty, she returns to the villa, mends fences with the teenagers, and stays on for a few hours after everyone else departs. In the closing moments, Anna is seen in a taxi to the airport, talking on the phone with Alex and seeming to anticipate a possible reunion, a small glimmer of hope against the backdrop of the Tuscan countryside.
