Yusef leaves his small town to find work and seek a better future. He plans to stay with his cousin Mahmut in Istanbul and join the shipping line he dreams of working for. This represents his hope for escape from limited rural opportunities.

Nazan's decision to remarry and move to Canada deeply affects Mahmut because he still has unresolved feelings for his ex-wife. Her departure represents a finality to their relationship that he cannot fully accept, causing him emotional turmoil throughout the film.

Mahmut hires Yusef to help his cousin earn money during a difficult time when Yusef faces a hiring freeze at the shipping line. The job also serves as a distraction for Mahmut himself, giving him purpose while he copes with his emotional struggles over Nazan.

When Mahmut returns from his mother's illness, he finds his house in disarray after being left unattended while he was away. The disarray symbolizes how Yusef has been living carelessly without responsibility, and the argument surfaces underlying tensions between the two cousins about Yusef's place in Mahmut's life.

The tension was building throughout Yusef's idle wandering and lack of purpose while Mahmut was away.
