Set in a quaint Texas town, this film explores the tumultuous lives of teenagers and their parents as they navigate the challenges posed by a technology-driven society. The pervasive influence of digital media deeply impacts their communication, self-perception, and relationships, amplifying the typical social hurdles that individuals encounter.
At the center of the story is Donald and Helen Truby, a couple grappling with sexual dissatisfaction in their marriage. Helen finds solace in extramarital affairs through the social media platform Ashley Madison, while Donald succumbs to seeking companionship with escorts via a different site. When Donald inadvertently stumbles upon Helen’s Ashley Madison account, he confronts her at a rendezvous with her latest partner. The next day, they both acknowledge their missteps and choose to pretend their indiscretions never took place.
The Trubys’ son, Chris, is a high school football player whose addiction to pornography leaves him desensitized to traditional forms of intimacy. In his quest for normalcy, he attempts to woo his classmate and cheerleader Hannah, yet falters when the moment of intimacy arises. As a result, Hannah chooses to end their relationship while falsely claiming they had slept together.
Driven by aspirations of fame, Hannah is supported by her mother, Donna, who manages a website dedicated to her daughter’s journeys. One day at the mall, they discover auditions for a television series, but Hannah gets disqualified because of the inappropriate pictures posted online by Donna. Recognizing the negative impact on Hannah’s future, Donna ultimately decides to take down the website.
Meanwhile, Tim, another football player, resigns from sports after his parents’ divorce, opting instead to immerse himself in an MMORPG. His gloomy disposition shifts when he begins dating the quiet and introspective Brandy Beltmeyer. However, Brandy’s overbearing mother, Patricia, keeps a tight grip on her daughter’s online interactions. In response, Brandy creates a secret Tumblr account where she expresses her true self. When Patricia uncovers the account and Tim’s messages, she strips Brandy of her internet access. As tensions escalate, Tim’s father, Kent, confronts him, revealing the difficulties both Tim and his father face in the aftermath of divorce. Feeling despondent, Tim falls into despair, leading him to attempt an overdose on his antidepressants. Patricia comes to the grave realization that her control over Brandy has crossed the line, prompting her to dismantle her surveillance tactics.
In a twist of fate, Donna begins attending content awareness meetings led by Patricia to understand what is permissible concerning her daughter’s online presence. Here, she meets Kent, sparking a new romantic connection. Though initially wanting to distance himself after learning about the website, Kent ultimately reconciles with his own parenting struggles and reconnects with Donna.
Allison Doss, a fellow cheerleader with an eating disorder, has long harbored feelings for football player Brandon Lender. After he finally notices her, they share a kiss and, pressured by him, Allison engages in a sexual encounter that Brandon treats as trivial. This encounter leads to serious health consequences for Allison, including a miscarriage due to malnutrition. When she reveals the unfortunate news to Brandon, his only concern is for his reputation. Frustrated by his selfishness, Allison vandalizes his property in a moment of anger.
As the film concludes, a profound message resonates through the narrator’s words, reminding us that humanity must cherish one another and the world we inhabit.
