In the bustling heart of New York City, Nick Cassidy, portrayed by Sam Worthington, checks into the Roosevelt Hotel under the alias “Walker.” Occupying a room on the 21st floor, he indulges in a lavish meal paired with champagne before meticulously wiping away any trace of his fingerprints from the cutlery, all while tidying the room in preparation for a drastic act.
The air thickens with tension as Nick appears poised to leap from the ledge, having left behind a haunting note on the desk notepad. Flashbacks reveal his harrowing past; just a month prior, he endured the brutal life of a prisoner—he was wrongfully convicted for a crime he adamantly insists he didn’t commit: the theft of a coveted $40 million Monarch diamond from David Englander, a wealthy jewelry store owner played by Ed Harris. Having faced violence from fellow inmates due to his background as an ex-cop, Nick’s past visits from his ex-partner Mike Ackerman add another layer of sorrow, especially after learning of his father’s passing.
With thoughts of escape racing through his mind—having cunningly fled from the Sing Sing Correctional Facility during his father’s funeral—he ventures to a storage yard, where he retrieves vital supplies, including alternate identities and cash. Back at the hotel, the scene unfolds as a crowd gathers below, drawing the police into the fray, led by Dante Marcus (Titus Welliver) who maintains a tight grip on the situation from behind the scenes as Jack Dougherty (Edward Burns) attempts to establish a connection with Nick.
Yet, Nick shows a preference for speaking with Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), a negotiator on leave after a traumatic incident involving a suicidal officer. Upon her arrival, Lydia cleverly secures Nick’s fingerprints by sharing a cigarette. Dougherty and the police then uncover Nick’s true identity, stirring up the past that saw him accused of stealing the diamond. As Lydia grapples with her complex feelings towards the media, particularly towards journalist Suzie Morales (Kyra Sedgwick), who blames her for the death of the earlier officer, Nick remains steadfast in his claims of innocence.
Meanwhile, unknown to the police, a daring heist unfolds as Nick’s younger brother, Joey (played by Jamie Bell), and his girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez) break into Englander’s store, driven by the determination to exonerate Nick while navigating budding romantic tensions. Nick employs clever wordplay to guide them through their heist using an earpiece, all while maintaining a precarious conversation with Lydia.
As tensions escalate, Dougherty alerts Marcus about Nick’s identity, leading to a frantic scramble to locate the diamond. Chaos reigns when Joey and Angie, initially evading security, set off the alarms in a daring attempt to recover it. Meanwhile, Ackerman arrives with evidence of Nick’s planned deception, but Lydia’s trust in Nick’s innocence prevails, and she uncovers corruption within the police ranks.
With the situation reaching a boiling point, Joey and Angie successfully hand the diamond to the hotel concierge, who, in a twist, assists Nick in his escape by providing him with a disguise. As the roof becomes the ultimate battlefield where loyalty and deceit clash, the stakes rise exponentially. In a shocking climax, Lydia fights against her captors, and Nick confronts Englander, reclaiming his name with the help of a crowd member who aids him in snatching the diamond back.
Ultimately, the truth shines as Nick is cleared of all charges, leaving behind his tumultuous past. The story culminates in a heartfelt reunion at his father’s bar, where plans for future happiness emerge as Joey proposes to Angie with a ring that echoes their shared path—a celebration of resilience and righteousness amidst chaos.
