The film unfolds in a dark and dystopian future Australia, facing a severe breakdown of civil order primarily caused by widespread oil shortages. This unsettling backdrop sets the stage for the struggles of a cash-strapped national police unit known as the Main Force Patrol (MFP), a group often derisively referred to as “The Bronze” by its adversaries. With the few remaining townspeople of the Outback constantly threatened by violent motorcycle gangs, the MFP finds itself overwhelmed and outmatched. At the center of this chaotic conflict is the MFP’s most skilled officer, Max Rockatansky, badge number MFP4073.
The story takes a gripping turn when a gang member named Crawford Montazano, also known as the Nightrider, manages to escape custody by killing an officer and making off with his vehicle. This incident triggers a high-speed chase where Max Rockatansky pursues Nightrider, ultimately leading to a fiery car crash that claims the Nightrider’s life. However, this victory comes with dire consequences, as the MFP’s chief warns Max that the Nightrider’s gang will now seek revenge for their leader’s death.
Led by the ruthless Toecutter (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne), the gang embarks on a rampage of vandalism, theft, and violence against the citizens. In a particularly gruesome encounter, the gang brutalizes a couple trying to escape their wrath, leaving both victims suffering under the gang’s cruelty. Responding to the atrocity are Max and his close friend, Jim Goose, who investigate the aftermath and stumble upon the young gang member Johnny the Boy (Tim Burns) amidst the chaos. Despite his role in the horrific events, Johnny is arrested but later released due to a lack of witnesses for his trial, leading to an explosive confrontation with Goose.
As tensions escalate, Johnny sabotages Goose’s motorcycle, leading to an accident that leaves Goose severely injured. After witnessing the consequences of the gang’s brutality firsthand, Max becomes increasingly disillusioned with the law enforcement he has dedicated his life to and ultimately decides to resign from the MFP. Seeking solace, he takes his wife, Jessie, and their infant son on a road trip to a seemingly peaceful coastal area.
Tragedy strikes when Jessie encounters the Toecutter’s gang. Despite her initial escape, the gang hunts her down and causes a horrific accident that leaves both her and their child dead. Consumed by a thirst for revenge, Max returns to his police uniform, armed with a shotgun, and sets out to hunt down those responsible for his family’s demise in a relentless pursuit.
Throughout his quest, Max systematically eliminates members of the gang, leading to intense confrontations, including a violent clash with Bubba Zanetti and a final showdown with Toecutter. In a particularly haunting scene, Max captures Johnny the Boy and leaves him with a harrowing choice of sawing through his own handcuff or ankle. As Max drives away from the inferno that ensues, it becomes clear that he has crossed a line from lawman to vengeful predator, all set against the backdrop of a desolate outback and relentless rain.
