Read the complete plot breakdown of Love, Lies (2016), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In Imperial Japanese-occupied Korea, Jung So-yul, Han Hyo-joo, is a gisaeng-in-training at one of the last remaining gwonbeon, where she learns to sing jeongga, the refined classical songs reserved for Korea’s upper class. So-yul is the daughter of a renowned gisaeng who also serves as the institution’s headmistress, shaping her into a poised, highly polished performer. Seo Yeon-hee, Chun Woo-hee, arrives at the school after being sold by her father who cannot take care of her, and the two girls form a deep, protective friendship that anchors them through the pressures of the gwonbeon.

By 1943, So-yul and Yeon-hee graduate as two of the school’s top students. Both relish the era’s popular songs while they vow to preserve their dignity as the sole gisaeng who still sing jeongga. So-yul’s natural talent and striking beauty thrust her into the spotlight, drawing invitations from powerful figures, including the Japanese chief of police Park Sung-woong. Yet her heart remains tethered to her boyfriend, Kim Yoon-woo, Yoo Yeon-seok, a celebrated pop songwriter who believes in reaching the wider public.

Yoon-woo asks So-yul to lend her voice to a song he is crafting to bolster Korean spirits under occupation. The dynamic shifts when he hears Yeon-hee sing and becomes captivated by her voice. He writes the song with Yeon-hee in mind and urges her to leave the gwonbeon so he can help her become a pop singer, arguing that pop songs resonate more with common people than the courtly jeongga ever could. Yeon-hee accepts the advice and departs the institution, while So-yul feels betrayed—he did not keep his promise to her.

As Yeon-hee participates in the production of her debut album, Yoon-woo’s attention fractures: he grows closer to Yeon-hee, and Soon the friendship is strained by Star-crossed ambitions and shared secrets. After Yeon-hee’s debut concert, So-yul goes to confront them and discovers an intimate moment that leaves her feeling deceived. Fueled by the ache of betrayal, So-yul resolves to reclaim what she believes was stolen from her, a decision that sets off a cascade of consequences that robs many around her of their stability and, in the end, consumes her own life.

The film weaves a somber chronicle of art, loyalty, and the costs of desire in a colonial landscape, exploring how ambition and devotion intersect with power, jealousy, and heartbreak. It stands as a luminous, tragic portrayal of two friends whose paths diverge under the weight of growing turbulence, and a young artist’s fall from grace that reshapes everyone’s world.
