In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Avery Montgomery is taking a break from college to spend time with his girlfriend Krista Wells and help raise their young son. He’s an avid swimmer who rises to championship level, and a standout win catches the eye of a college scout, hinting at a possible scholarship on the horizon. His circle of friends includes Cashmere, a crack dealer whose temperament clashes with Avery’s more measured approach, and Dre, also known as Andre Wells, Krista’s brother, who has grown up with them and shares a long history of close bonds. Together they navigate a world where loyalty runs deep, but danger can erupt in a heartbeat.

Earlier that day, Broadway, another dealer under Cashmere, confronts money troubles and ends up clashing with Cashmere, who uses force to reassert control. Broadway’s anger festers, and a later attempt at robbery escalates into a deadly shootout at a drive-through. Broadway’s gun is later found in Cashmere’s car, creating a dangerous misunderstanding that threatens to derail their lives.

After the swim meet, the group heads out to celebrate Avery’s victory. In the back seat, Dre spots the gun and questions Cashmere about its origin, but Cashmere genuinely has no idea how it got there. A nearby police pursuit quickly spirals out of control: a traffic stop, the officers’ gunpoint confrontation, and the tragic death of Cashmere’s pit bull. When a gun is drawn, Cashmere is wounded, and the trio’s world tilts toward a frame-up that lands them in prison for a decade.

Inside, each man faces a stark new reality. Cashmere becomes entangled in the brutal hierarchy of the facility, while Dre endures devastating abuse at the hands of a White Supremacist cellmate, Graffiti, who runs a prison-wide drug operation. Avery, meanwhile, befriends an older inmate, Malachi Young, who has weathered eighteen years behind bars and offers hard-earned wisdom as Avery searches for a way out. Cashmere joins Graffiti’s drug network but also aligns briefly with Clean Up before a shifting balance of power ignites a deadly struggle for control of the inmate economy.

The prison’s drug trade intensifies as Graffiti uses smuggling methods—carrying packets swallowed by girlfriends—to keep supplies flowing. A staged killing is made to look like an accident, and a lockdown follows the corpse found in the laundry room. The period of isolation tests the prisoners, with Graffiti’s hold on Dre growing ever more dangerous, as the violence and fear ripple through the wing. In a pivotal moment, Avery steps in to defend Dre during a brutal brawl, a decision that triggers widespread retaliation and a tense disciplinary hearing.

Malachi, in a selfless act, takes responsibility for the incident to spare Avery from a harsher punishment, and earns a transfer to another facility in the process. He also leaves Avery a parting gift—a copy of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man with a concealed shank—an act that plants a seed of resilience in Avery as he prepares to mentor his new cellmate, Hill.

Meanwhile, the prison’s power vacuum after Graffiti’s death triggers a riot. Cashmere turns on Avery during the chaos, and a brutal confrontation unfolds, culminating in Clean Up’s own demise at Cashmere’s hands. A desperate, final act of violence sees a guard shoot Cashmere as the danger closes in, while Avery stands shaken but free, stepping back into the world and the possibility of rebuilding his life with Krista Wells and their son, Jordan, in his eyes.

As the dust settles, Avery rediscoveries his love of swimming and the simple patience of family life. He returns to the pool and to Krista, sharing a quiet moment of relief and the hopeful possibility of a future beyond the prison’s walls. The journey, fueled by loyalty, betrayal, survival, and redemption, remains a stark reminder of how quickly a single day can redefine a life.
