Lisa and the Devil

During a tour of Toledo, Lisa Reiner notices a fresco showing the Devil carrying off the dead. The image unsettles her and seems to foreshadow the strange events that will follow. The scene establishes a mood of creeping menace linked to the mysterious music box and Leandro.

Lisa enters a shop after hearing a faint melody and finds a music box topped with rotating figurines. The shop owner explains the box belongs to Leandro, a man who bears a striking resemblance to the Devil from the fresco. The revelation tightens the link between the box, Leandro, and Lisa's growing unease.

Fleeing the unsettling discovery, Lisa is directed through a nearby arch by Leandro. After climbing a stairway, she senses she is being lured deeper into a trap. The sequence plants the seeds for Carlos' ominous appearance.

Carlos, who resembles Leandro’s dummy, confronts Lisa and calls her Elena, claiming he has returned for her. Panicked, she pushes him away, and he tumbles down the stairs to his apparent death. This violent moment forces Lisa to flee further into the night.

As night falls, Lisa hitches a ride with Francis and Sophia Lehar and their chauffeur George. When their car breaks down, they seek shelter at a nearby villa where Leandro acts as a butler for a blind countess and her son Maximilian. The villa becomes the sinister hub for what follows.

The group is allowed to stay in a cottage on the estate while George repairs the car. Sophia and George have sex while Francis bathes, and Lisa flees the cottage after seeing Carlos trying to enter through a window. Tension and fear escalate as the night deepens.

Maximilian serves dessert to an unseen detainee in an upstairs bedroom and tells the detainee that Carlos has returned and will not be allowed to come between them. He burns a photograph of Elena, a figure who resembles Lisa, deepening the sense that a longer history haunts the present.

Lisa experiences visions in which Elena stands with Carlos, followed by a vision of herself kissing Maximilian who morphs into Carlos. The dreamlike sequence blurs boundaries between past and present and undermines Lisa’s grip on reality. The images hint at entangled loyalties and hidden motives within the villa.

Francis lashes out at Sophia for her affair, triggering a volatile confrontation. Sophia discovers George's body, stabbed and left in the repaired car. Maximilian and Leandro urge Francis to abandon the corpse and depart without involving the police.

Leandro revives Lisa, takes her measurements, and tells her that Carlos is dead. Lisa learns more of the villa’s secrets as the countess examines Sophia’s body and hints at Elena’s fate, deepening the sense of an inescapable past surrounding the living and the dead.

Maximilian leads Lisa to Elena, a skeletonized figure kept in a hidden room, and tries to seize control of her fate. He knocks Lisa unconscious and rapes her, but the moment is interrupted by Elena’s eerie laughter. The countess offers to protect Maximilian if he eliminates Lisa, heightening the peril.

Maximilian kills Carlos and then murders Sophia; the countess confronts him in the chapel before being stabbed to death by Maximilian. He dies when he falls from a window, and Leandro appears behind the countess, who collapses like a dummy. Lisa awakens in the villa's ruins, and the finale reveals a plane full of corpses with Leandro as pilot, sending Lisa spiraling into Elena-like death.
