The film opens in a vibrant city in Central India, where five-year-old Saroo is enchanted by a swarm of butterflies. Inspired by his adventurous older brother, Guddu, Saroo's playful spirit leads them to sneak onto a coal train for mischievous fun.

After their playful day, Saroo expresses his desire for a sweet treat called 'jalebi.' Guddu promises him that he will have it one day, showcasing the simple joys of their childhood and their strong brotherly bond.

Their lives take a turn when Guddu decides to leave for a week to help with hay bales. Saroo, eager to accompany him, insists on joining, marking the beginning of an adventure that will change their lives forever.

When they arrive at the train station, Saroo falls asleep on a bench, but awakens to find Guddu missing. In confusion and panic, he boards a train, leading to a journey that takes him 1,600 kilometers away from home.

Saroo finds himself lost and homeless in the bustling city of Calcutta, overwhelmed by the chaos and the language barrier. As he navigates the streets, he is approached by a woman named Noor, who has dangerous intentions.

Saroo is adopted by John and Sue Brierley, transitioning from his life in India to a warm home in Australia. He adjusts to his new family life, although the absence of his real family continues to affect him.
