Elizabeth Leroy Amy Grabow grows up in the 1950s United States, devoting her life to serving God, yet the road is paved with hardship that tests her faith and makes her question the purpose of her own journey. She lives with her widowed father, Dr. James Leroy Christopher Allport, a dedicated physician who watches as Elizabeth’s mother dies of cancer in her youth. Fresh out of school, she longs to see the world and has little interest in settling down with her childhood friend and neighbor, Will Bishop Bruce Weitz, when he asks her to marry him.
One day, she is asked to pick up the new assistant pastor, Ben Phillips Peter White, at the train station and show him around town. Expecting an older gentleman, she is surprised to find him young and handsome. They fall in love and become engaged. Ben leaves to serve as a chaplain during the Korean War, believing that God has called him to serve and promising to marry Elizabeth upon his return. He gives her a Bible inscribed with a vow they both believe in: > Though none go with me, yet will I follow. No turning back, no turning back.
Elizabeth keeps busy helping others and writes letters to Ben while she waits. When her father passes away, Elizabeth discovers he has left her no money, and the house is heavily mortgaged, threatening to be taken by the bank. She moves in with Will, who offers her a secretarial job in his auto insurance company. The news arrives that Ben has died after a direct hit to the army hospital, leaving Elizabeth crushed and numb. Yet, as time passes, she begins to fall in love with Will, especially as he starts dating someone else. In a moment of resolve, she decides to move out, but Will — moved by his own feelings — declares his love for her, and they marry.
After their honeymoon, a surprise letter arrives: Ben is not dead after all; he has been a prisoner of war and will be home soon. Elizabeth tells Will, who is crushed by the news but quietly accepts the reality. He asks her to write him about life with her husband, and Elizabeth commits to her new life with Will, choosing love in the present.
Will and Elizabeth have a son, and life appears to steady into a lengthy, peaceful arc. Their son marries, and his wife bears them a daughter, Carrie Mariana Klaveno. But tragedy strikes when their son and daughter-in-law are killed in a car accident on the way home from a Christmas party, leaving their granddaughter to be raised by her grandparents, Will and Elizabeth. In the wake of loss, Elizabeth’s faith is tested anew, and she asks why God takes away those she loves — her parents, her first love, and now her son.
Will remains at Elizabeth’s side through decades, but he ultimately dies of brain disease after more than forty years of marriage. The community heartily celebrates Elizabeth’s half-century of service at a party hosted by her longtime friend Fran Harmon Denise Grayson. Across the stories shared at the gathering, many narrate the ways Elizabeth touched their lives and offered quiet, steadfast faith in difficult times. The party ends on a poignant note, with a final sighting of Ben among the attendees — a reminder that the connections of faith and love can endure in unexpected ways.
