Rosario, a single mother, makes a perilous journey across the border into Los Angeles, leaving behind her young son, Carlitos, in his Mexican hometown with his ailing grandmother, [Mamá Chito]. Through their weekly phone calls, Rosario paints a vivid picture of the world beyond the payphone, sharing snippets of the neighborhood and the rhythm of life in a way that keeps her son connected to home.

On Carlitos’s ninth birthday, tragedy strikes when his grandmother dies in her sleep, and he learns that his aunt and uncle are attempting to seize custody in order to gain his mother’s remittances. This revelation hardens his resolve to find his mother and reunite their fractured family. His plan leads him to rely on the help of coyotes to cross the El Paso–Juárez border back into Mexico, a dangerous path that begins his long, winding journey north and south.

The attempt goes awry when the coyotes’ car is towed by police for unrelated offenses. Carlitos exits the vehicle in a desolate lot in El Paso, Texas, losing the money he had set aside for the crossing. With no funds to buy a ticket, he appeals to a stranger to purchase one for him. When the man discovers he has no money, he offers to take Carlitos in exchange for payment, but the plan quickly spirals toward danger. A local woman intervenes, offering shelter among other undocumented immigrants and introducing him to a very different, precarious reality.

One immigrant agrees to escort Carlitos to Los Angeles after a shift, and Carlitos decides to contribute to the group’s work in exchange for a leg up on their journey. This fragile arrangement is upended when immigration officers raid the tomato farm where they work. In the chaotic escape, Carlitos is separated from the group and ends up traveling with an immigrant named Enrique, a man who initially wants nothing to do with him but gradually becomes an unlikely ally.

The pair hitchhikes toward Tucson, Arizona, where tension flares between them—Enrique, angry and wary, tells Carlitos to go. Yet when a moment arises where some men threaten Carlitos’ belongings, Enrique decides to intervene, saving him from danger. After this, Carlitos manages to secure work for both of them at a restaurant, a small victory that lends him a glimmer of stability on the road.

Seeking information about his father, Carlitos and Enrique connect with Oscar, the absent father, and hope for help. Oscar offers promises that never come true, leaving Carlitos feeling abandoned and disappointed. Undeterred, Enrique resolves to take Carlitos to Los Angeles, and the two hop a bus toward the city. They finally arrive in the bustling heart of East L.A., where their search for Rosario leads them to a PO box and the possibility of finding the payphone from which she calls.

While their search continues, Rosario faces hardship of her own, losing one job to racism but clinging to the hope of reuniting with her son. She briefly considers marrying a U.S. citizen to secure a green card, only to back out at the last moment, uncertain about the path ahead. Then a call from Doña Carmen, Rosario’s confidante, shatters the quiet: Carlitos has crossed the border and Rosario’s mother has died. The news spurs Rosario to return to Mexico in search of her child, driven by a renewed sense of urgency and love.

As fate would have it, Rosario boards a bus and looks out the window, catching a glimpse of a young boy at a payphone—Carlitos—across the street. She realizes that he knows where to find her, and a powerful moment unfolds as she follows this thread of connection back toward home. Morning light washes over the city as Enrique and Carlitos encounter law enforcement; Enrique, sensing danger, distracts them with a splash of coffee and urges Carlitos to run. He is arrested in the process, leaving Carlitos to press on alone.

The two paths converge in a final, quiet moment: Carlitos locates the payphone, and Rosario finally spots him across the street. She calls out to her son, urging him not to cross yet while their eyes lock in a shared, unspoken plea. The crosswalk light shifts from the red hand to the white walking figure, and with the screen fading to credits, the audience is left with a fragile, hopeful note about family, home, and the long road back toward each other.
