Lightning Strikes Twice

In the early 1950s, wealthy rancher Richard Trevelyan, Richard Todd, is on death row in a Texas prison, his fate swinging on the edge of a razor. A new trial ends in a hung jury when a lone juror refuses to budge, and in a moment that feels almost like a reprieve, he is set free.

Shelley Carnes, Ruth Roman, is on her way to a Texas dude ranch for a much-needed rest. Along the road, she crosses paths with the affluent J.D. Nolan, Frank Conroy, and his wife Myra Nolan, Kathryn Givney, and ends up borrowing their car. A sudden storm strands her, and in a twist of fate she encounters Trevelyan by chance. The encounter unsettles him, because he learns that she knows both J.D. and Myra, and the knowledge unsettles the fragile balance of trust that surrounds him.

The dude ranch welcomes Shelley with a quiet suspicion, and it soon becomes clear that Liza McStringer, Mercedes McCambridge, who runs the place with her younger brother String, Darryl Hickman, is the one who bears the heaviest news: she was the juror who let Trevelyan off. The town’s whispers have left her shunned, a social weight she carries with growing bitterness.

Shelley finds a strange kinship with String, a young man who eyes her with a mix of curiosity and vulnerability. The bond grows, and Shelley is invited to stay a little longer. Through conversations and quiet moments, she uncovers a troubling thread: Lorraine, Trevelyan’s late wife and a murder victim, was widely despised, and there are hints that Lorraine may have had an affair with J.D. Nolan, Trevelyan’s business partner through inherited ventures. The web of potential motives thickens, and Shelley senses that nothing about Trevelyan’s past is simple or clean.

Driven by a mix of sympathy and curiosity, Shelley searches for Trevelyan and finds him brooding on a cliffside. There are faint sparks between them, but fear and doubt hold him back, and she leaves with a heavy heart, unsettled by what she’s learned and what she suspects.

When Shelley returns the car, she spends a night at the Nolan home and is introduced to Harvey Turner, Zachary Scott, a neighbor with a reputation for chasing women. Harvey immediately makes a bold advance and adds a sharp, cutting voice to the room when he talks about Lorraine, suggesting Trevelyan was lucky to escape her influence.

Harvey’s boldness escalates into danger: he kidnaps Shelley and guides her to a secret rendezvous with Trevelyan. The men turn out to be close friends, and Trevelyan had asked for this favor. For a moment, the situation exposes a complicated, blurred line between loyalty and desire as the couple decide to act on their feelings and marry hastily. Liza arrives uninvited at the wedding reception, accusing Trevelyan of murder and leaving in a storm of anger and accusation.

That night, Shelley’s fears rise to the surface again, and she flees back to the safety of the dude ranch. There, Liza delivers a furious confession: she killed Lorraine, driven by jealousy, and had forced Lorraine out of Trevelyan’s orbit once and for all, all while a tangle of lies had spiraled around the trial. Trevelyan and Harvey arrive just in time to prevent Shelley from harm as Liza and String escape in their car.

The pursuit ends in tragedy when Liza drives off a cliff, though she survives long enough to confess to a priest. The revelation hits hard: Trevelyan’s insistence that not everyone told the truth at his trial appears to be true, and he maintains that he did not know how Lorraine died. In the aftermath, the sheriff offers a reassuring nod, signaling a fragile truth at last. The couple leaves the scene together, a new sense of hope blooming as Shelley presses forward into a cautious, hopeful honeymoon, their future riding on the uncertain hum of forgiveness and truth.
