In 1930s East Africa, mining engineer John Gamble [George Brent] is falsely accused of killing his partner, Roger Smythe [Miles Mander]. The real culprit is Eli Snedeker [George Tobias], a rival prospector whose obsession with diamonds drives a destructive streak. Snedeker shoots Smythe during a desperate search for Smythe’s valuable gem, the Star of Africa, which is valued at $50,000. After weaving a convincing tale of Gamble’s guilt, Snedeker manages to convince other miners and Gamble finds himself marked as a murderer.
Framed and hunted, Gamble has no choice but to flee across the ocean and begin a new life. He stows away on a ship bound for England, where he rebrands himself as John Bradley and starts over in the world of investment banking. Decades pass, and Gamble’s fortunes grow, yet fate has another collision with his past when he meets Kit Sheffield [Brenda Marshall], a wealthy heiress who turns out to be Smythe’s daughter. Kit’s candid, intense ambition is clear: she longs to see John Gamble dead, a chilling irony given Gamble’s own desperate past.
On a stormy night, destiny offers Gamble a chance to vanish for good. He secretly plants his credentials on the body of a dead itinerant beneath a London bridge, and when the body is found, authorities believe Gamble is truly dead. The ruse clears the way for Gamble and Kit to pursue a life together, with marriage on the horizon.
Yet the past has a stubborn grip. Snedeker relocates to London as a semi-retired diamond cutter, and a courtroom confrontation becomes unavoidable. Gamble/Bradley reluctantly takes the stand and confirms Snedeker’s accusation that he is the real John Gamble, the man who killed Kit’s father, a reveal that unsettles everyone and tests the bonds they’ve formed.
In a pivotal moment, Delia Snedeker [Lee Patrick], Snedeker’s wife, is called to testify and swears that she witnessed Snedeker kill Smythe. Her testimony delivers a devastating counterpoint to Gamble’s pretense, but before the jury can digest it, Snedeker erupts in a dramatic act, pulling a pistol and shooting his wife. The shocking turn clinches the case: the court is convinced of Gamble’s innocence, and the path finally opens for him to marry Kit at last.
Across the foggy avenues and rain-slick streets of London, the truth untangles a web of deception, ambition, and love. The evidence of a life rebuilt, the hardness of those who chase wealth, and the enduring pull of a second chance all thread through Gamble’s journey. In the end, justice aligns with loyalty as Gamble and Kit step into a future defined by truth rather than fear, their union a quiet victory against the long shadows of a forged past.
