In 1757, Colonel Munro's children—Alice, Cora and Davy—arrive from England to visit their father. They travel toward the fort, where Munro commands, setting the stage for the adventure. The family reunion anchors the unfolding conflict between colonial families and native alliances.

General Webb at Fort Edward is swayed by Magua's ruse, believing Montcalm's French and Indian forces are coming from the south.
