Kya Kehna

Priya Bakshi Preity Zinta is the bubbly, free-spirited daughter of Gulshan Bakshi Anupam Kher and Rohini Bakshi Farida Jalal. In a warm, bustling home, her parents, brothers, and her best friend Ajay Chandrachur Singh support her as she starts university. Ajay harbors a quiet, unspoken love for Priya and dreams of a future in which they might marry.

At university, Priya catches the eye of the wealthy playboy Rahul Modi Saif Ali Khan. He seems to genuinely care, and against the warnings from Ajay and her brother Vicky Bakshi Mamik about his reputation, she believes in his charm. They begin a relationship and even grow close, with Priya convincing her parents to meet Rahul. Yet, during those early talks about marriage and the future, he mocks their hopes and abandons her, leaving Priya heartbroken.

She soon learns she is pregnant. Rahul acknowledges paternity when Priya’s parents press him again, but he refuses to marry Priya. Rahul’s mother Navneet Nishan also denigrates Priya’s family, implying they seek financial gain rather than love. Priya faces a difficult choice and chooses to keep the baby, a decision that leads her father to banish her from the house, a punishment that shatters the family. The rest of the family struggles to bring her back, but Gulshan’s resolve hardens before he eventually realizes life without Priya is untenable and consents to her return, supporting her through the pregnancy.

Back at university, Priya endures ostracism; she is shunned for her pregnancy and what many deem a ruined reputation. The university board, influenced by Rahul’s mother and others, moves to expel her. A year-end performance by the students mocks Priya and her situation, prompting a powerful moment where Priya delivers a speech about love, honor, and respect. She insists she is not to blame alone for the pregnancy and that she chose to carry her baby and live with dignity, a defense that moves many in the audience, including Rahul.

Ajay steps forward and declares his willingness to marry Priya and raise the child together. Rahul, filled with remorse, approaches Priya’s family and offers to share responsibility for the child, a proposal they consider. Before Priya can answer Ajay, her water breaks and she hurries to the hospital, joined by Rahul and her family. At an event to celebrate the baby’s birth, Rahul proposes to Priya, saying he is ready to marry and raise the child together. Ajay wishes them well and begins to walk away. In the end, Priya rejects Rahul and confesses her love for Ajay, asking whether he will still accept her and the child. Ajay agrees to this, Rahul accepts Priya’s decision and leaves, and the story closes with a sense of hope for a life built on commitment and a renewed family bond.
